Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Records

Mark stared at the charred words in the diary as rain pelted the brittle paper. His world, already shattered by betrayal, fractured into an entirely new dimension of deceit.
Neither must ever learn who the mother really is.
""What does it mean?"" Elena asked, peering over his arm under the glow of the detective’s flashlight. ""Mrs. Victoria was pregnant. Everyone saw her. She stayed in the hospital for two weeks!""
""Victoria wore designer maternity dresses and spent four months in private villas in Tuscany,"" Mark said, his memory racing backward through the fog of the past year. He had been drowning in the European tech acquisition, flying back and forth between London and Tokyo. Every ultrasound had been sent via email. Every doctor’s appointment had been handled exclusively by Eleanor.
""We need to see Dr. Andrew Larson,"" Mark told Vance. ""He was the chief obstetrician who signed Leo's delivery certificate at Saint Jude's.""
""Larson's office is ten minutes away in the medical district,"" Vance said, turning toward his cruiser. ""I'll run the lights. Follow me.""
The convoy raced through the flooded city streets, tires throwing massive plumes of water against the curbs. When they arrived at Larson’s private clinic, the glass front doors were unlocked, swinging loosely in the wind.
Mark drew his sidearm, signaling his security team to secure the perimeter. He stepped into the reception area, the smell of burnt insulation and ozone immediately stinging his nostrils. The clinic’s server room at the end of the hall was engulfed in thick, acrid smoke. Someone had fired incendiary rounds into the hard drives.
Mark kicked open the door to Larson’s private office.
Dr. Larson was sitting behind his mahogany desk, his head resting face down in a pool of fresh blood. A single gunshot wound marked the back of his skull. The desk drawers were ransacked, papers scattered across the floor like autumn leaves.
""Too late,"" Vance swore, holstering his gun and checking the corpse's cooling wrist. ""They’re cleaning house. Whoever is running this is five steps ahead of us.""
Mark didn't look at the dead doctor. His eyes scanned the floor until he spotted a crumpled medical chart half-hidden under the wastebasket. It was an intake form from six months ago.
Mark flattened the blood-spattered paper with his hand.
The surrogate mother’s legal name was blacked out with heavy industrial marker. But the emergency contact listed at the bottom remained untouched:
May you like
Contact Name: Clara Vance.
Mark slowly raised his head, his gun leveling directly at the detective’s chest. ""Vance. Why is your sister’s name on my son's medical chart?""
