Chapter 15 - The Final Threshold

The wind on the rooftop helipad was deafening. The twin rotors of the executive helicopter whipped the rain into a blinding vortex of mist.
Julian stood near the open cabin door, dressed in a heavy overcoat, clutching a high-tech portable incubator against his chest. Inside, Leo was crying, his tiny fists beating against the clear acrylic shield.
The heavy steel fire door to the roof blew off its hinges with a thunderous bang.
Mark walked out into the storm alone. He had discarded his weapons. His shirt was soaked in blood, his face bruised and pale, but his eyes were steady, burning with a lethal, singular focus.
""Julian!"" Mark shouted over the roar of the turbines. ""It's over! The federal marshals have surrounded the perimeter! The FAA has grounded every private flight in the state!""
Julian paused, stepping back toward the edge of the helipad, twenty feet above the sheer drop of the skyscraper’s glass facade. He drew a polished chrome revolver from his coat and pressed the muzzle directly against the acrylic glass of Leo’s incubator.
""One step, brother, and I pull the trigger!"" Julian screamed, his composure completely shattered. His eyes were wide, manic, the mask of the sophisticated corporate titan peeling away to reveal a desperate, cornered rat. ""You think you won? I took your company! I took your reputation! I took your son!""
""He's not your son, Julian,"" Mark said, taking a slow, calculated step forward. ""He never was. Clara is here. The donor code was mine. You’re holding my blood.""
Julian flinched, his hand trembling on the grip. ""You're lying! Eleanor promised me! She said the child carried my genetic sequence!""
""Eleanor played you just like she played Victoria,"" Mark continued, his voice calm, cutting through the howling storm. ""She used you to seize the voting shares. The moment you landed in Zurich, she would have had you eliminated to consolidate total control.""
Julian glanced toward the rooftop stairwell, where Clara and Detective Vance—propped up by federal agents—stepped into the rain. Clara’s eyes were locked on the incubator, her hands reaching out in silent agony.
""No... no!"" Julian screamed, his mind unraveling. ""If I can't have the Sterling empire, nobody will!""
Julian spun toward the edge of the helipad, preparing to hurl the incubator into the sixty-story abyss.
Mark launched himself forward with the last ounce of strength in his broken body.
He didn't tackle Julian’s body—he dove horizontally across the wet landing pad, his arms wrapping around the acrylic incubator just as Julian's hands released it over the edge.
Mark's ribs slammed brutally against the steel perimeter railing. The force knocked the wind from his chest, but his fingers locked around the incubator’s handle like iron vices. Leo was safe.
Julian lost his footing on the rain-slicked metal grating. As the helicopter pilot panicked and pulled up, the tail rotor swung violently, the backdraft slamming into Julian’s chest.
Julian shrieked as he tipped backward over the railing, his fingers clawing desperately at the wet air.
""Mark! Grab my hand!"" Julian screamed, dangling over the sixty-five-story drop.
Mark looked down at his brother. He held Leo against his chest with one arm, his other hand resting on the top bar of the railing. For three long seconds, their eyes met—the boy who had been given everything, and the boy who had tried to steal it all through blood and fire.
Mark didn't reach out.
Julian’s fingers slipped from the wet aluminum edge. A single, fading cry was instantly swallowed by the roar of the wind as he vanished into the fog and rain below.
Mark pulled himself up, turning his back on the abyss. He walked slowly across the helipad toward Clara, who fell to her knees in the rain, weeping uncontrollably.
Mark knelt beside her and gently opened the incubator’s latch. Clara lifted Leo into her arms, pressing the warm, crying child against her chest as the morning sun finally broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the city in brilliant, golden light.

Behind them, the elevator doors opened, and federal agents escorted Eleanor away in heavy chains.
Mark stood beside Clara, his hand resting gently on Leo's head. The battle for the empire was over. The bloodline was whole. And for the first time in his life, Mark Sterling knew exactly what he was fighting to protect."
