Chapter 15 - The Open Road

The sun began to crest the jagged peaks of the horizon, painting the morning sky in strokes of bruised purple, burning orange, and brilliant gold. The diner sign flickered off as the morning light chased away the shadows of the small town, casting a warm, steady glow over the worn asphalt parking lot.

Jax pulled the heavy bike to a smooth stop right outside the front doors of the diner. The neon lights hummed softly, and the familiar smell of strong coffee and burnt toast drifted out from the kitchen. He cut the engine, the sudden silence of the morning feeling like a blessing.

He swung his leg off the saddle and turned to help Ethan down. The boy hopped off easily, his old sneakers hitting the pavement with a solid, grounded thud. Ethan looked up at the familiar building, then down at his small hands, which were no longer holding a stage microphone or a secret letter, but were free to carry whatever he chose.

Jax reached down, pulling the oversized leather jacket off the boy's shoulders and adjusting his collar. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out the old, faded Polaroid photograph—the one showing a young biker holding a baby twelve years ago—and handed it to Ethan.

""Keep that,"" Jax said softly, his voice steady and sure. ""A reminder of where we came from, so we never forget where we're going.""

Ethan took the photograph carefully, his big hazel eyes shining with a quiet, powerful light. He slid it safely into the pocket of his jacket alongside the small folded paper, right over his heart.

The waitress stepped out of the diner's front door holding two mugs of steaming coffee and a tall glass of milk, a warm, genuine smile on her face as she looked out at the two of them standing together in the morning sun. The past was dead, the lies were buried in the wreckage of a ballroom miles away, and the road ahead stretched out infinitely, wide and clean and entirely their own."
