BLOODLINE OF BETRAYAL / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Dust

""You're late,"" Ethan said, his voice ringing out with an eerie, heartbreaking maturity that completely stripped away his eight years of childhood.

The tension in the ballroom snapped like a guitar string under too much pressure. Nathan looked back and forth between the biker and the boy, his brain refusing to connect the dots. ""What is going on here? Ethan, who is this man? What is that picture?""

Jax didn't answer Nathan. He walked right past the high-society tables, completely ignoring the wealthy guests who shrank away from him in sheer terror, their expensive silk ties and diamond necklaces suddenly feeling like cheap armor against a real storm. He walked straight toward the edge of the stage, his boots stopping right at the base of the wooden steps.

He looked up at the boy, his rugged, bearded face softening in a way that seemed almost physically painful for him to do. The tough biker exterior—the leather, the tattoos, the decades of running from his past—melted away, leaving behind the exhausted ghost of a young man who had fled a small-town diner twelve years ago because he was too terrified to be a father.

""Your mom told you I was dead, didn't she?"" Jax’s voice was barely a murmur, raspy and thick with unshed tears that he refused to let fall.

""She said you were a ghost,"" Ethan corrected softly, his big hazel eyes shining with unshed tears of his own. ""She said ghosts don't come back when the sun comes up.""

Sarah scrambled backward on her hands and knees across the polished floor, her emerald gown twisting around her legs like a trap. ""Jax, stop it! Don't you dare ruin this! He’s just a kid, you have no right—""

May you like

""I have every right, Sarah!"" Jax roared, turning his head sharply toward her, his voice shaking with a sudden, violent fury that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead. ""You hid him from me for eight years! You took my blood, you took my life, and you sold it to a man who didn't even know your real middle name just so you could buy a penthouse in the city!""

The guests erupted into a frenzy of murmurs and gasps. Clara stood frozen, her hands clamped over her mouth as the entire architecture of the wedding collapsed into a sprawling, multi-layered scandal. Nathan turned slowly to look at Sarah, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization. The woman he thought he was rescuing had actually been running from a ghost—a ghost who had just walked through the front door to collect what belonged to him.
