Chapter 3 - Anatomy of a Lie

""My mom didn't want to come tonight,"" Ethan’s voice cut through Clara’s forced hospitality like a razor blade. The statement hung in the air, disjointed and bizarre, freezing the entire room in a state of utter confusion. Nathan stopped dead in his tracks, his head tilting to the side as his gaze snapped back to the stage, looking for Sarah in the sea of green and black formalwear.
""Sarah?"" Nathan called out, his voice losing its jovial warmth, replaced by a sudden, sharp edge of masculine authority. He scanned the crowd until his eyes locked onto the emerald gown. ""Sarah, what is he talking about? You're right there.""
Sarah looked like she had just been sentenced to the gallows. She couldn't speak; her throat had tightened shut, her vocal cords paralyzed by pure, unadulterated terror. The thousands of dollars Nathan had spent on her dress, the apartment lease he covered, the luxury car parked outside—it all flashed before her eyes, built on a foundation of calculated deception that was now crumbling into dust beneath her son's tiny shoes.
""She only came because you bought the dress, Uncle Nathan,"" Ethan continued, completely innocent of the social devastation he was causing, reciting the adult secrets he had absorbed like a sponge from the backseat of a sedan. ""Just like she said you bought the car. She told her friend on the phone that you're a total pushover because you'll pay for anything as long as she looks sad enough.""
A collective gasp rippled through the front rows of the tables. Several elderly relatives dropped their napkins. The best man choked on his saliva, coughing loudly into his fist as the high-society veneer cracked wide open, exposing the rotting wood underneath. Nathan’s face turned from confusion to a dark, dangerous shade of crimson. The blood rushed to his ears, drowning out the ambient noise of the banquet hall. His eyes darted from the boy to Clara, and then out into the crowd to find Sarah cowering like a trapped animal.

""Is this a joke?"" Nathan’s voice was low, trembling with a volatile mixture of public humiliation and sudden, violent realization. He took another step toward the boy, his fingers curling into tight fists at his sides. ""Ethan. Look at me. Who told you to say that?""
Ethan didn't flinch. He simply raised the microphone back to his lips, his eyes wide, clear, and completely devastating.
