Chapter 1 - The Echo of Betrayal

The grand marble foyer of the Sterling estate was frozen under the weight of a metallic voice. The speakerphone buzzed softly from Clara’s slender hand, broadcasting words that felt like a death sentence: "Victor's child must disappear before the inheritance settles." The words reverberated off the vaulted ceilings and gold-trimmed pillars.
Victor stood motionless, his tailored suit hanging heavy against suddenly numb limbs. He looked at Julian, his four-year-old son, clinging fiercely to Clara’s light blue maid uniform. The boy’s small hands gripped her apron as if the world beneath them was collapsing.
Helena, radiant in her blood-red evening gown, lost the flush in her cheeks. Her manicured hand, previously raised in fury, slowly dropped. Her diamond rings clicked against the heavy gold links around her neck. "Victor, that’s... that’s fabricated," she whispered, her voice faltering from its earlier shriek. "She set me up. A domestic worker trying to extort this family!"
Clara did not flinch. Her dark eyes remained fixed on Victor, sharp and unyielding. "The burner phone was hidden in your vanity drawer, Helena. Along with the wire transfer slip to an overseas account in Cyprus. Do you want me to read the transaction number?"
Victor took one slow, deliberate step toward Helena. The sound of his dress shoe striking the polished black-and-white tiles seemed louder than thunder. "Who was on that call, Helena?" he asked, his tone deceptively quiet, carrying an undercurrent of lethal calm.

"Victor, please, listen to reason—"
Victor reached out and snatched the phone from Clara’s grip, his gaze dropping to the caller ID. The Greek name etched on the screen was one he had not seen in seven years—a name belonging to a syndicate boss he thought was buried beneath the Aegean Sea. Before he could speak, the phone abruptly clicked, ending the call, followed immediately by the sharp, distant chime of the estate gates swinging wide open.
