Chapter 13 - Reckoning

Pendelton gasped for air as Dante’s forearm pinned his throat against the mahogany table. Dante leaned down, his face inches from the executive's ear, his voice barely louder than a whisper, terrifying in its absolute lack of fury.

""You knew her name was Paige,"" Dante whispered.

Pendelton choked, clawing at Dante’s iron grip. ""Dante... please... the business was going to collapse... the federal indictments...""

""You poisoned an eight-month-old child in an intensive care bed,"" Dante continued, his thumb pressing into the pressure point beneath Pendelton’s jaw until the older man let out a strangled whimper. ""You paid thirty thousand dollars to a pediatric nurse to swap a saline ampoule for an organophosphate.""

""I had to protect the firm!"" Pendelton sobbed, all pretense of elegance disintegrating into pathetic, sniveling terror. ""You were going to drag everything we built into the gutter for a bastard child you didn't even know existed!""

Dante’s expression didn't change, but his eyes turned completely black with intent. ""She is not a bastard. She is my daughter. And Vance Logistics no longer belongs to the board.""

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper—a full transfer of corporate assets and intellectual property into an irrevocable family trust, naming Paige Ramos as the sole beneficiary, with Elena Ramos designated as sole legal guardian and executor. Next to it, he laid a sleek, titanium pen.

""Sign it,"" Dante ordered, easing the pressure on Pendelton’s windpipe just enough to allow him to draw a ragged, wheezing breath.

Pendelton looked at the document, his hands shaking violently. ""If I sign this... the board is bankrupt. I have nothing. Thirty years of work... gone.""

""If you sign it, you walk out of this building and get in your car,"" Dante said calmly. ""If you don't sign it, I throw you through that panoramic window, and you have forty-eight floors to think about the choice you made.""

Pendelton didn't hesitate. He seized the pen with trembling fingers, scrawling his jagged, erratic signature across the designated lines, initialing every page until the ink ran dry on the final clause. He dropped the pen, looking up at Dante with hollow, pleading eyes. ""It’s done. It’s all hers. Everything. Now let me go.""

Dante picked up the document, inspected the signature with clinical detachment, and folded it into his pocket. He took a step back, straightening his collar.

""I told you that you could walk to your car, Arthur,"" Dante said, turning his back on the old man and walking toward the double doors. ""I didn't say the car would start.""

As Dante opened the boardroom doors, the sound of the elevator chime echoed from the executive lobby, revealing two federal agents in dark suits flanked by city detectives holding an arrest warrant.
