Chapter 15 - The Final Legacy

By mid-afternoon, the executive helipad on the roof of the residential tower was prepared for departure. A sleek, civilian Airbus helicopter sat idling, its rotors spinning in a lazy, quiet cycle, ready to transport Elena and Paige to a private airfield in upstate New York where an unmarked Gulfstream was fueled for Zurich.

Elena stood at the base of the boarding stairs, holding Paige close against her chest. The infant was swaddled in a clean, soft cream-colored blanket, her wide hazel eyes taking in the open sky, completely oblivious to the war that had been waged over her existence twenty-four hours earlier.

Dante stood three paces away, flanked by his two most trusted security drivers. He wore his dark suit once more, pristine and tailored, his hands resting lightly in his pockets. He looked formidable, untouchable, the embodiment of the power he was preparing to surrender.

Elena walked over to him. She didn't say a word. She simply reached out and gently took Dante’s right hand from his pocket, guiding it toward the baby.

Dante hesitated, his fingers trembling slightly—the same imperceptible tremor that had seized him in the pediatric ER hallway. Slowly, he extended a single scarred index finger. Paige’s tiny, warm hand reached out from the fold of the blanket, her miniature fingers wrapping tightly around his knuckle. She held on with an astonishing, instinctive grip.

Dante looked down at the tiny hand clasped around his own. Beneath her tiny sleeve, the crescent birthmark was visible against her wrist, resting directly against the corresponding mark scarred into his own skin. A single tear escaped his dark eyes, cutting a clean path down his cheek through his trimmed beard before he could stop it.

""Tell her..."" Dante started, his voice cracking, the iron discipline of a lifetime shattering in a single breath. ""Tell her that her father was a builder. Tell her I built a wall between her and the dark, and that the wall held.""

""I’ll tell her you loved her,"" Elena whispered, her own tears falling freely now. ""I’ll tell her you were her father.""

Dante leaned down, pressing his lips gently against the infant’s forehead. Paige let out a tiny, contented sigh, releasing her grip on his finger as she settled deeper into her mother’s arms.

Dante straightened up, the emotion vanishing behind an impenetrable mask of steel. He stepped back, nodding to the flight crew. ""Take them up.""

Elena climbed the stairs into the cabin, turning once to look back at him through the tinted window. The door slid shut, locking securely. The helicopter lifted smoothly into the clear blue sky, banking eastward toward the horizon until it became nothing more than a speck of light swallowed by the morning sun.

Dante stood on the empty helipad, the wind whipping his coat against his frame. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, tapped a single speed-dial contact, and brought the receiver to his ear.

""Federal Bureau of Investigation,"" a stern voice answered. ""Special Agent Miller, Organized Crime Division.""

Dante looked out over the skyline of the city he had conquered and was now ready to burn.

""Agent Miller,"" Dante said, his voice cold, steady, and clear. ""This is Dante Vance. I’m standing on the roof of Vance Tower. Bring your paperwork, and bring your handcuffs. We have a lot of names to discuss."""
