Chapter 1 - The Shattered Threshold

The sound of shattering wood still echoed through the cavernous foyer of the Sterling estate. Dante Vance did not look down at the splintered fragments of the grand mahogany double doors, nor did he spare a glance for the thug groaning in agony on the polished marble floor. His entire world narrowed to the small, shivering figure trembling against his chest.

""Daddy... don’t leave me here,"" Leo whispered, his tiny fingers digging into the tailored navy fabric of Dante’s lapel. The child smelled of cold cellar dampness, stale bread, and unvarnished terror. His oversized beige shirt was caked in grime; his bare feet bore dark, purple bruises.

Dante held the back of his son’s head, feeling the wild fluttering of a fragile heartbeat beneath delicate ribs. His voice, usually cold enough to freeze blood, softened to a low murmur. ""You’re never going back in there, Leo. Never again.""

Behind them, Amanda Sterling stood frozen, clutching her champagne sequin dress as if it were armor. Her face was flushed with venomous fury, masking the panic clawing at her throat. ""You have no right to enter my home like this, Dante!"" she screeched, her diamonds shaking under the chandelier. ""He belongs to Julian now! The court gave us temporary custody! You’re trespassing—you’re a criminal!""

Dante stood up slowly. He was sixty-eight years old, his dark hair streaked with silver and swept back with lethal precision. His weathered face bore scars from wars Amanda’s pampered family could never comprehend. As he turned to face her, two of his personal enforcers stepped forward, closing ranks around him like an impenetrable wall of black suits.

""A court paper bought with dirty money does not override blood, Amanda,"" Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm. ""You starved my son. You kept him barefoot in a basement while Julian gambled his inheritance away.""

""He was being disciplined!"" Amanda hissed, taking a frantic step back as Dante walked toward her. ""Julian will destroy you for this. The board meets tomorrow morning. You won’t have a company left to run by noon!""

Dante paused just inches from her, his cold gaze piercing right through her bravado. ""Tell Julian that tomorrow, the board will not be reviewing his proposals. They will be attending his funeral—financial or otherwise.""

Turning on his heel, Dante carried Leo out into the crisp evening air. A convoy of three black armored SUVs idled in the courtyard, their headlights carving silver beams into the falling dusk. Dante climbed into the rear seat of the lead vehicle, pulling a soft cashmere blanket over his son.

The boy closed his eyes, completely exhausted by the rescue, drifting into uneasy sleep. As the heavy doors sealed shut with a motorized thud, Dante tapped the partition window. ""Drive,"" he commanded.

His lead operative, Marcus, turned around from the front passenger seat. His face was grim. ""Boss, Julian knew we were coming. He didn't stay at the mansion. He took the ledger.""

Dante’s jaw tightened. If Julian possessed the encrypted ledger, Leo’s life wasn't merely in danger—the entire Vance empire was already compromised from within.
