Chapter 11 - The Chamber of Sorrows

The heavy steel hatch swung open with a hollow groan of metal hinges.
Inside, the compartment was brightly lit with sterile, white fluorescent tubes. Medical monitors hummed softly against the walls, their green readouts tracing steady, rhythmic heartbeats. In the center of the room sat a pressurized medical containment bed.
Dante walked inside, every footstep heavy with six years of unspent grief.
Lying on the bed, pale and motionless, was Elena.
Her dark chestnut hair was long, fanned out across the white pillow. Her face, though drawn and thin from years of medically induced sleep and clinical isolation, was unmistakably the woman Dante had thought lost forever. Intravenous lines snaked from her slender arms to specialized nutritional pumps.
Dante dropped his weapon to his side and fell to his knees beside the bed. His weathered, calloused fingers gently touched her cheek, feeling the soft warmth of her skin.
""Elena..."" he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he had buried for over two decades. A single tear slipped down his scar-etched cheek. ""I’m here. I’m so sorry.""
As if responding to his voice through the fog of medication, her eyelids fluttered faintly. The cardiac monitor beeped at a slightly faster cadence. Her lips parted, dry and cracked.
""D... Dante...?"" a faint, fragile voice escaped her throat.
""I'm here, my love. You're safe,"" Dante said, pressing his forehead against her hand, kissing her knuckles. ""Leo is safe. I have him.""
Her fingers weakly twitched, trying to curl around his hand. ""Leo... my baby...""
""He’s alive. He’s strong. He looks just like you,"" Dante choked out, his vision blurring. ""I’m taking you home. Both of you.""
Suddenly, the red emergency alarm across the ship began to wail, bathing the room in pulsing crimson light. A harsh mechanical voice blared through the internal intercom speakers:

“WARNING. HULL BREACH DETECTED IN FORWARD BALLAST. SCUTTLE SEQUENCE INITIATED. THREE MINUTES TO TOTAL COMPARTMENT SUBMERSION.”
Dante shot to his feet. Thorne had rigged the ship to sink if the security perimeter on sub-deck three was breached. The freighter wasn't escaping to international waters—it was a floating trap designed to bury Dante and Elena at the bottom of the ocean.
