Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Fortress

The iron gates of the Vance estate groaned open as the convoy glided into the sanctuary of the high-walled mountain compound. Floodlights bathed the limestone facade in brilliant white, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns. Dante carried Leo upstairs straight to the east wing, away from the prying eyes of house staff and the mounting chaos downstairs.
Dr. Jonathan Hughes, the family physician who had served Dante for thirty years, was already waiting in the bedroom. With gentle hands, the doctor cleaned the child's scraped soles and treated the angry welts along his forearms.
""Malnutrition, minor contusions, and severe psychological shock,"" Jonathan murmured after Leo finally fell into a medically aided, restful slumber. ""A few more weeks under Amanda's watch, Dante, and the boy would have suffered permanent damage. Who puts a six-year-old through this?""
""A desperate man who wants my empire,"" Dante replied, adjusting the duvet over Leo’s small shoulders. ""Julian knew Leo was my only direct heir. Without him, the succession clause in our trust reverts the entire syndicate to the surviving nephew. That’s Julian.""
""Julian is reckless, but he isn’t brave,"" Jonathan pointed out, packing his medical bag. ""He doesn’t have the stomach to forge court documents and defy your security grid alone. Someone backed him.""
Dante’s eyes hardened. ""I know.""
Leaving two armed guards stationed at Leo’s bedroom door, Dante descended the marble spiral staircase to the basement war room. Monitors lined the perimeter, displaying live feeds of global shipping docks, downtown corporate towers, and tactical team movements across three states.
Marcus stood at the central glass desk, sorting through decrypted cellular intercepts. ""We traced Julian’s burner phone,"" Marcus reported without looking up. ""He didn't leave town. He's holed up in the penthouse at the Grand Royale.""
""Why hasn't he fled to the borders?"" Dante asked, pouring two fingers of bourbon without drinking it.
""Because he’s meeting a buyer at midnight,"" Marcus replied, looking up with a grim expression. ""He’s selling the encrypted ledger, boss. Not to our business rivals, either. The signature on the wire transfer belongs to an offshore shell company owned by Gabriel Thorne.""

The glass in Dante’s hand shattered. Whiskey and amber droplets splattered across the polished floor.
Gabriel Thorne had been Dante’s fiercest enemy twenty years ago—a ruthless cartel boss Dante had believed dead after a shipyard explosion in Macau. If Thorne was alive and holding the ledger, Leo had not been taken for ransom. He had been bait.
