Chapter 3 - The Broken Alliance

The penthouse of the Grand Royale smelled of expensive cigar smoke and raw panic. Julian Sterling paced relentlessly across the Persian rug, clutching a scotch tumbler with trembling hands. His immaculate Italian suit was rumpled, his hair uncombed.
""You said Dante was tied up in Zurich!"" Julian shouted into his phone, his voice cracking. ""He kicked my front doors down! He took the boy! He nearly put my head through a wall!""
On the other end of the line, a raspy, modulated voice chuckled coldly. ""Calm down, Julian. The boy has served his purpose. Dante left Europe without his standard military detachment to retrieve him. He’s here, in the city, vulnerable.""
""I am not calm!"" Julian screamed. ""Dante has my accounts frozen! The bank rejected my wire five minutes ago! If I don't get the money you promised for the ledger, I'm a dead man walking!""
""Bring the drive to Pier 42,"" the caller instructed smoothly. ""Ten million in bearer bonds will be waiting for you. Come alone.""
The line went dead. Julian stared at his phone, his chest heaving. He hurried toward the steel safe hidden behind a modern painting, typing the code with frantic fingers. Inside lay a single titanium flash drive containing the private bank accounts, shell companies, and political bribes of the entire Vance dynasty. With this, Gabriel Thorne could bankrupt Dante overnight and wipe his bloodline off the map.
Suddenly, the penthouse lights flickered and died.
Total darkness consumed the sixty-story apartment. The humming air conditioner fell silent. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights sparkled innocently, but inside, a terrifying quiet settled over the room.
Julian dropped the drive on the floor and dropped to his knees, frantically feeling the carpet. ""Hello? Security?"" he yelled into the dark.
A faint click echoed from the balcony doors.
Julian froze. Through the moonlight filtering past the sheer curtains, a tall silhouette emerged. It wasn't Thorne's men. It was Dante Vance, his trench coat billowing slightly in the draft, a silenced automatic held casually at his side.
""You always were careless with valuable things, Julian,"" Dante said softly from the shadows.
Julian scrambled backward until his spine hit the mahogany desk. ""Dante... wait! Listen to me! It was Thorne! He threatened Amanda! He told me he'd kill us if we didn't hold the kid!""

""You let your wife beat my son,"" Dante said, stepping closer, the moonlight glinting off his silver cufflinks. ""And worse, you thought you could sell my family's legacy to a ghost.""
""Wait!"" Julian pleaded, raising his trembling palms. ""Thorne isn't coming to Pier 42! It's an ambush! He already sent a hit squad to your estate!""
