Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Lie

The polished marble of the foyer felt freezing beneath Claire’s knees. She kept baby Liam wrapped against her chest, feeling the frantic rhythm of his heartbeat match her own. The child’s whimper softened into exhausted sniffs, his tiny fingers clutching her damp olive sweatshirt. Above them, Richard remained motionless, his eyes locked onto the smartphone screen.

The image looping on the security playback was undeniable. A tall figure stood framed in the eastern service corridor—a man with Richard’s own sharp cheekbones, broad shoulders, and dark wavy hair. Julian. The brother supposedly lost to a fatal yacht explosion off the coast of Marseille three years ago. The brother whose estate and company shares had transitioned quietly into Evelyn’s family trust.

“You said his body was identified,” Richard’s voice dropped below a whisper, stripped of warmth. “You brought me the forensic files yourself, Evelyn.”

Evelyn retreated half a step up the curved stairs, her manicured fingers grazing the mahogany rail. The haughty fury she had directed at Claire moments earlier vanished, replaced by an unsettling, clinical stillness. She lifted her chin, her sleeveless plum gown taut against her rigid shoulders. “It was what the French authorities told us, Richard. You were grieving. You were broken. I handled what you couldn’t bear to touch.”

“He was in my house two minutes ago,” Richard spat, turning the screen directly into her face. “He disabled the east wing motion sensors. That requires master clearance codes only three living people possess: myself, our head of security, and you.”

Claire raised her head from the floor, speaking softly through dry lips. “Mr. Sterling... when Liam tripped, he didn't just stumble. Someone had pulled the stair runner loose from the risers. The brass pins had been sheared off from underneath.”

Evelyn fired a venomous glare at Claire. “Quiet! You are a hired domestic trying to dodge gross negligence charges!”

“She isn't lying,” Richard said, his gaze fixed on Evelyn’s trembling throat. “Because Liam wasn't supposed to be upstairs tonight. I was.”

The front double doors groaned as the digital keypad outside chimed twice, signaling a master entry bypass.
