Chapter 15 - Blood and Ash

Richard stepped into the vault, the cold mist swirling around his boots. “Victor. You were my father’s oldest friend.”

“Your father was a sentimental fool who let bloodlines dictate commerce,” Victor hissed, drawing a low-caliber pistol from his coat. “The company belongs to the architects of its growth, not a pair of broken brothers and a bastard child born in a petri dish!”

Before Victor could raise his weapon, a heavy shadow crashed into him from the side.

Julian, bleeding from a cut on his shoulder, drove Victor against the wall of safe deposit boxes with concussive force. The pistol went spinning across the floor, vanishing into the fog.

Victor struggled violently, but Julian was relentless. He wrenched the leather courier bag from Victor’s shoulder and delivered a short, brutal right hook that snapped Victor’s head back, dropping the older man instantly into the gathering carbon dioxide fog on the floor.

Julian grabbed Victor’s respirator, ripping it from his face to ensure he stayed down, and turned to Richard. In his hands, he held the antique vellum document bearing the original wax seal of the Sterling family.

The fog began to thin as the secondary exhaust vents kicked in, drawing the heavy gas out through the rooftop louvers.

Claire stepped into the vault entrance, holding Liam securely. The toddler had pulled down the cloth from his mouth, looking around the bright vault with round, sleepy eyes.

Richard looked at the document in Julian’s hands, then looked at the little boy resting his head against Claire’s shoulder. The resemblance was striking now—the exact shape of Julian’s brow, the same stubborn set of the chin.

“He’s yours, Julian,” Richard said, his voice raw with a strange mixture of grief and relief. “He was always yours.”

Julian lowered the charter, his rough fingers tracing the wax seal. He stepped slowly toward Claire, his hands trembling slightly as he reached out toward Liam.

The child didn't pull away. Liam reached out a small, pale hand, his fingers touching the scarred tissue on Julian’s cheek with innocent curiosity.

A single tear cut through the grime on Julian’s face. “He doesn't know me, Richard. You’re the only father he’s ever known.”

“Then we raise him together,” Richard replied firmly. “No more lies. No more ghosts.”

From the floor behind them, Victor Vance let out a weak, rattling laugh as he struggled for air.

“You think... you won?” Victor coughed, blood flecking his lips as he pointed a trembling finger at the digital clock on the vault wall. It read 5:58 AM.

“The market opens in two minutes,” Victor rasped, smiling through bloody teeth. “And the automated liquidation order... was tied to my heartbeat monitor. Look at your phone, Richard.”

Across the city, the dawn light began to crest over the horizon as Richard pulled out his phone. The screen flashed bright crimson, displaying an emergency banking alert: Total Sterling Liquidity Depleted: Balance $0.00."
