Chapter 12 - The Midnight Breach

The Sterling Tower rose sixty stories above the financial district, its glass facade dark and silent against the midnight skyline. The city streets below were nearly empty, slick with rain that mirrored the yellow streetlamps.

Inside Richard’s armored SUV, the silence was suffocating. Richard drove, his eyes fixed on the empty expressway ahead, while Julian sat in the passenger seat, loading fresh rounds into a secondary magazine he had acquired from the trunk’s emergency locker. Claire sat in the back with Liam, refusing to be left behind at the precinct where Marcus’s network might still have sympathizers.

“Who else was with you in Europe?” Richard demanded, checking the rearview mirror.

“No one,” Julian answered flatly. “I worked alone. Evelyn is playing games from the back of the police cruiser to divide our attention.”

“She gave badge numbers, Julian,” Richard countered, his voice rising. “She gave names of private security contractors registered out of Geneva. If they breach the central vault on the forty-fifth floor, they aren't looking for money. They’re looking for the original corporate charter.”

“The bloodline clause,” Julian muttered, his eyes narrowing.

“Explain it to me,” Claire interrupted from the rear seat. “Both of you keep dancing around it. What is in that charter?”

Richard glanced back briefly. “Our grandfather established Sterling Global under an irrevocable family pact. The ownership cannot be divided or sold to third parties as long as a direct male heir lives. If both Julian and I die without legitimate biological heirs, the entire conglomerate defaults to the board of directors—a board chaired by Evelyn’s father.”

“And if Liam is Julian’s son,” Claire realized, “he is the direct heir. But without the original charter, proving that claim in court takes years of probate litigation.”

“Decades,” Julian corrected. “During which Evelyn’s family liquidates the infrastructure and funnels the capital offshore.”

Richard pulled the vehicle sharply onto the curb in front of the high-rise tower. The front glass revolving doors were shattered, shards of safety glass glittering across the granite plaza.

Inside the dark lobby, the security console was smashed, its monitors hanging dead from their cables.
