Chapter 11 - The Secret Clinic

The rain began to fall again, a soft drizzle that misted over the flashing emergency lights. Richard climbed into the back of the medical van, sitting on the bench opposite Claire. Liam didn't stir; his small chest rose and fell in deep, unbroken sleep.
“I need to see the drive, Claire,” Richard said quietly.
Claire didn't argue. She pulled the black flash drive from her pocket and handed it to him. Richard connected it to a ruggedized law enforcement tablet provided by the lead detective outside.
The file structure was meticulously organized. Corporate accounts, forged wire transfers, surveillance logs—and a private folder marked St. Helena Clinic, Zurich.
Richard opened the folder with a trembling finger. Inside were medical records dating back four years. Genetic sequencing reports, patient consent documentation, and an offshore escrow agreement funding a private surrogacy protocol.
Richard read the primary patient name: Julian Sterling.
The air left Richard’s lungs in a silent rush. He stared at the high-resolution neonatal profile embedded in the document. The genetic donor was Julian. The surrogate was an anonymous European donor whose contract had been brokered entirely through Evelyn’s private legal firm before Julian’s disappearance.
“Evelyn didn't conceive Liam,” Richard whispered, the words tasting like ash. “She never had an affair. She took Julian’s biological child from the clinic after he ‘died.’”
“Julian had frozen embryonic material before his maritime expedition,” Claire explained gently, looking down at the sleeping child. “Evelyn used her power of attorney to authorize the implantation right after the funeral. She brought Liam home to you nine months later, claiming she discovered she was pregnant with your child right before the tragedy.”
“To bind me to her,” Richard realized, his stomach twisting violently. “To make sure that if I ever suspected her, I would never leave because of the baby.”
“And to secure Julian’s half of the trust,” Claire added. “Julian’s will stated that his estate passed directly to any direct biological descendants. By presenting Liam as your child, she controlled both halves of the empire.”
A sharp rap on the van door interrupted them. The detective poked his head in, his face grave.
“Mr. Sterling,” the detective said. “You need to come to the transport cruiser. Your wife just gave a statement.”

“What did she say?” Richard asked.
“She said Julian didn't come back alone tonight. She said there's a second team already at your downtown corporate headquarters.”
