Chapter 1 - The Bloodline's Edge

The crystal chandelier overhead hummed with a quiet vibration as the double mahogany doors settled against the wall. Alec rose to his full height, his broad frame shielding Clara from her father’s venomous gaze. Clara remained curled on the cold, polished black marble, her hand clutching her bare shoulder where the lace of her bridal gown had been torn away. The dark violet welts across her back burned like brand marks, exposed to the chilled air of the suite.

Her father, Victor Vance, stood framed in the doorway, his silk bowtie crisp, his silver hair immaculate. Behind him, two armed men lingered in the shadows of the gallery, their hands resting over tailored jackets. Victor’s lip curled into a sneer of paternal entitlement. ""Alec,"" Victor drawled, stepping over the threshold without taking his eyes off his daughter. ""Control your bride. We have four hundred investors waiting downstairs. A family dispute does not belong on the floor of a dressing suite.""

""A family dispute?"" Alec’s voice was disturbingly level, stripped of all human warmth. He slowly rolled back the cuff of his charcoal jacket, revealing the hardened lines of his forearm. ""You took a belt to her on the day she belongs to me.""

""She is my blood before she is your property,"" Victor snapped, taking another arrogant stride into the room. ""She defied an explicit order regarding the offshore transfer. She needed discipline. Now get her on her feet, fix that damned dress, and let us finish the ceremony. You need this merger as much as I do.""

Alec didn't glance down at Clara, but his boot shifted an inch backward, pressing against the hem of her train—an anchor in the darkness. ""You think this alliance is about your ships and your dummy corporations, Victor?"" Alec whispered, his tone sinking into a predator’s cadence. ""I agreed to this wedding to drag you out of the shadows. But looking at her back... the contract just changed.""

Victor laughed, a dry, dismissive bark that echoed off the high ceiling. ""You wouldn't dare. Touch me, and every dock from here to Rotterdam freezes before midnight.""

Alec took a single step forward, closing the distance so fast Victor’s bodyguards barely had time to flinch. His fingers clamped around Victor’s immaculate lapels, lifting the older man onto the balls of his patent leather shoes. ""I don't need your docks,"" Alec hissed into the old man's ear. ""I only needed your signature. And you signed an hour ago.""

Before Victor could shout for his men, Alec slammed him back into the corridor. The two bodyguards reached for their holsters, but Alec’s personal security materialized from the shadows of the hall, their submachine guns raised, safeties clicking off in lethal unison.

Victor’s sneer finally fractured into panic as he looked down the barrel of Alec’s enforcers. Alec stepped back inside the bedroom, his eyes fixed on Victor’s widening pupils.

""Lock him in the wine cellar,"" Alec ordered coldly, ""and strip his comms.""

Just as the heavy doors slammed shut, Clara let out a stifled gasp from the floor. Alec spun around to see blood seeping through the fabric of her skirt—not from her back, but from a jagged, concealed cut across her ribs.
