Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Veil

The words struck Alec harder than any bullet ever could.

The dark ballroom seemed to tilt on its axis. The memory of her tear-streaked face, the brutal lash marks across her exposed back, the blood seeping through her wedding gown—it all replayed through his mind in a dizzying storm.

""What did you say?"" Alec demanded, his fingers tightening on Julian's shoulder until the fabric tore.

""Victor Vance had no daughters,"" Julian wheezed, clutching his bruised ribs. ""Vance’s real family was poisoned four years ago in Geneva. Donald created 'Clara Vance' from whole cloth. She was trained at the Black River compound. The scars... the bruises... they did that to her this morning, Alec! To sell the lie! To make you lower your shield!""

Across the ballroom, the heavy steel vault doors slammed shut with a hydraulic hiss—Donald had locked himself inside the panic room. But Alec wasn't looking at the vault.

His head snapped up, his gaze fixing on the ornate ceiling.

Upstairs. Suite 404.

He had left Clara alone with Dr. Evans, his private armory, and the master override keys to the Thorne family trust accounts.

Alec tapped his comm. ""Evans! Evans, respond!""

Only static came through the receiver. Then, after three agonizing clicks, the line opened.

It wasn't the doctor’s voice.

It was a smooth, melodic laugh, completely devoid of the trembling terror Clara had displayed on the marble floor an hour ago.

""You really are your father’s son, Alec,"" Clara’s voice purred through the earpiece. ""So chivalrous. So predictable. Did you really think a man like Victor Vance could hold a whip against me and live to boast about it?""

Alec felt the chill of absolute betrayal settle into his bones. ""Where is Evans?""

""Sleeping,"" she replied playfully. ""Permanently, I'm afraid. He was getting in the way of my terminal access. You have a fascinating financial structure, darling. It took me twelve minutes to drain your European holdings into our dummy accounts.""

""You won't make it off the grounds,"" Alec said, his voice dropping into a register of calm that bordered on psychopathic.

""I'm already on the roof, Alec,"" Clara whispered, the rhythmic chop of helicopter blades thrumming through the background of the call. ""And don't worry about Julian. He was always meant to deliver the punchline. Come up to the helipad. Let's see if your wedding vows still hold when there’s a gun to my head.""

The line clicked dead.

Alec turned to Julian, shoving a discarded pistol into his brother’s hands. ""Stay behind the pillar. Shoot anything that moves.""

""Alec, don't go up there!"" Julian pleaded. ""It's an extraction team! She's leaving nothing behind!""

Alec didn't reply. He turned and sprinted toward the private express lift, his heart pounding not with sorrow, but with the cold, calculating fury of a betrayed king.
