Chapter 14 - The Bridge of Traitors

The air inside the yacht's steel corridors smelled of ozone, gun oil, and burning circuitry. Alec swept through the passageways with ruthless economy of motion, clearing every blind corner with lethal precision. Behind him, Clara moved like a ghost, holding a dropped submachine gun against her hip, her breathing ragged, leaving a trail of small, dark blood droplets on the pristine white decking.

They reached the central bridge doors. The reinforced bulkhead was sealed shut, the red emergency lockout light glowing ominously.

Alec placed a breaching charge on the hydraulic locking pins. ""Fire in the hole,"" he muttered, pulling Clara behind the angle of the steel bulkhead.

The charge blew with a sharp, localized bang. The heavy doors buckled inward, smoke billowing into the bridge.

Alec charged through the breach, his weapon raised.

The bridge was illuminated only by the frantic orange flashing of the console monitors. Sitting in the central captain's chair, dressed in a pristine gray suit with a glass of scotch in his trembling hand, was Donald Thorne.

Scattered across the floor were shredded documents and half-melted hard drives. Beside Donald sat a dead bodyguard, shot through the temple—Donald had clearly executed his own man to prevent any leaks.

""You're late, Alec,"" Donald said, his voice shaking with a mixture of drunken rage and hysteria. He didn't raise a weapon. He didn't need to. In his left hand, resting on the arm of the chair, was a digital detonator.

""Step back, Uncle,"" Alec said, keeping his rifle trained on Donald’s forehead. ""Let go of the dead-man switch.""

Donald let out a sickening, wheezing laugh, his bloodshot eyes darting toward Clara as she limped into the room. ""Look at you, 304. Still crawling after him. I made you what you are. I pulled you out of the gutter, gave you a purpose, taught you how to bleed without crying... and you throw it away for this boy?""

Clara leveled her weapon at Donald’s heart. Her hands were trembling, not with weakness, but with an overwhelming, consuming hatred. ""You murdered my mother, Donald. You told me it was Victor Vance. You used me to tear down your rivals while you hid behind your high walls.""

""Your mother was weak!"" Donald screamed, slamming his scotch glass onto the navigation console, shattering it into shards. ""Just like Julian! Just like Alec! You think you’ve won? Look at the console!""

Alec glanced at the primary nav-screen. The scuttle charges weren't set on a timer. The yacht was on full autopilot, locked into a collision course with the harbor's primary commercial oil refinery, just three miles ahead.

""If this ship hits that terminal,"" Donald grinned, his teeth stained with scotch, ""half the coastline goes up in flames. The Thorne name will be etched into history as the greatest terrorists this country has ever seen. And you'll die right here with me.""

""Override the autopilot, Donald,"" Alec stepped closer, his finger tightening on the trigger.

""Shoot me, and the switch triggers the hull explosives instantly!"" Donald roared, thumb hovering over the red pressure pad. ""We all drown together!""

Before Alec could calculate the distance to disarm him, Clara dropped her submachine gun.

She lunged forward, not with a weapon, but with the raw weight of her broken body, tackling Donald out of the chair.
