Chapter 12 - Ash and Echoes

The helicopter touched down on a desolate, rusted landing pad atop an abandoned industrial grain silo fifteen miles north of the city. The storm was finally breaking, leaving behind a cold, gray dawn that painted the fog-drenched landscape in bleak hues of slate and iron.
Julian was already there, having been evacuated by Alec’s perimeter extraction unit before the mansion fell. He stood wrapped in a heavy wool trench coat, leaning on a walking stick, watching with hollow eyes as Alec hauled Clara out of the helicopter.
Alec set her down against the corrugated steel wall of the observation deck. Her face was gray, hypothermia creeping into her veins despite the heavy blankets Marcus had wrapped around her. Evans's hasty field stitches had held up just barely, but she had lost too much blood to stand on her own.
Julian stepped forward, looking down at the woman who had acted as his shadow warden for six months.
""She looks smaller without the whip in her hand,"" Julian said quietly, his voice raspy from smoke inhalation.
Clara glared up at him through matted bangs, a faint, mocking smile touching her cracked lips. ""I kept you alive, Julian. If it weren't for me, Donald would have fed you to the harbor crabs four years ago.""
""You kept me alive as leverage,"" Julian spat, though there was no rage in his tone—only an exhausting sorrow. ""Every time Donald wanted to remind Victor Vance of his leash, you brought me out and made Vance watch me bleed.""
Alec stepped between them, his voice cutting like a scalpel. ""Where did Donald go, Clara? The mansion's south tunnels led to the old drainage ducts. There was only one extraction craft that cleared the airspace before we lifted.""
Clara tilted her head back against the rusted steel, closing her eyes. ""He took the offshore yacht. The Leviathan. It’s anchored twelve nautical miles out, in international waters. He has a private flight scheduled from the helipad on the aft deck to Zurich at 0800 hours.""
Alec checked his tactical watch. It was 06:15.
""The Leviathan is a floating fortress,"" Julian warned, turning to his brother. ""Donald spent forty million retrofitting it with automated turrets and a thirty-man security squad. You can't board it from the air, Alec. Their radar will light you up five miles out.""
""I don't plan on flying in,"" Alec said, his jaw rigid.
He turned his gaze back down to Clara. She was looking at him, her breath shallow.
""There's an override code,"" Clara murmured, shivering as the cold wind whipped her hair. ""Donald gave it to me on our last operation in Prague. A frequency that turns off the yacht's air-defense matrix for five minutes... in case I needed emergency extraction.""
Alec knelt beside her, his face inches from hers. ""Give it to me.""
Clara looked at him, her eyes dark, bottomless, and unexpectedly fragile. ""Give me your word. When you take him down... you let me pull the trigger.""
Alec stared into her eyes for three long seconds. ""I make no promises to ghosts, Clara. But I'll make sure you're in the room when he falls.""
Clara let out a ragged breath, leaning forward to whisper six numbers into his ear.
Alec stood up, turning to Marcus. ""Prep the interceptor boat at the marina. We have forty minutes to cross the maritime border.""
As Alec walked toward the steps, Clara’s voice called out weakly from behind him. ""Alec... don't trust the frequency.""
May you like
Alec stopped, glancing back over his shoulder.
""The override code works,"" she whispered, a chilling tear cutting through the dried blood on her cheek. ""But the moment it's transmitted... the yacht's hull charges will prime. Donald won't let you capture him alive. He'll take you down with him.""
