Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Single Breath

The cold white marble sent an agonizing shock through Julian’s spine as he collapsed against the staircase. Every instinct screamed for oxygen, but his throat felt sealed by concrete. The golden glow of the crystal chandelier fractured into blinding prisms of light before his tear-filled eyes. His tailored black tuxedo pulled painfully tight across his heaving chest. Wedding vows, toasts, and champagne were supposed to fill this morning, yet here he lay, suffocating in absolute silence on his own wedding day.

Then, gentle footsteps broke through the roaring pulse in his ears.

A tiny hand pressed against his thigh. Julian strained to look down, catching sight of cream lace and straight blonde hair. It was Ellie, barely five years old, the flower girl he had briefly greeted an hour earlier. Her hazel eyes were calm—unnervingly calm for a child witnessing a man on the brink of death. In her small grip was an auto-injector. Without hesitation or a single tremble, she drove the needle directly through his black dress trousers.

The medicinal sting burst beneath his skin, followed by a fierce, scorching warmth.

Air violently flooded Julian’s windpipe. He gasped, his chest vaulting upward as he dragged in a ragged, desperate breath. His fingers clawed weakly at the marble floor, his vision sharpening. Beside him, Ellie slowly retracted the empty casing, watching him with quiet empathy.

""Why..."" Julian managed, his voice tearing from his throat in a raw, hoarse whisper. ""Why did you give this to me?""

Ellie tilted her head slightly. ""Because you couldn’t breathe. I know how much it hurts.""

Footsteps clicked frantically across the grand foyer. Teresa, the estate maid, slid onto her knees on the slick marble, her arms wrapping around the child in sheer panic. Her eyes fell onto the spent auto-injector in Ellie's palm.

""Ellie..."" Teresa’s voice cracked, trembling with terror. ""Ellie, that was your last one.""

Julian froze, the newly returned air suddenly turning to ice in his lungs. Teresa looked up at him, her dark eyes wide and damp with an unspoken nightmare.

""Mr. Julian,"" Teresa choked out, ""the ambulance is delayed by the storm... and she doesn't have another dose.""
