Chapter 14 - The Empty Hall

Three days later, the storm had completely vanished, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn sun that illuminated the grand mansion. The ballroom was empty; the rented centerpieces and towering champagne towers had been packed away and returned. The grand marble foyer was quiet, the slick red injection mark on the floor thoroughly scrubbed away.

Julian stood by the bottom of the grand staircase, wearing a clean, simple dark suit. Clara stood beside him in an elegant, unadorned ivory dress, holding a simple bouquet of white roses.

Standing in the center of the hall was a woman in a modest coat, her face worn with exhaustion and overwhelming gratitude. Beside her stood Ellie, wearing a brand-new cream lace dress, holding a small wicker basket filled with fresh red rose petals. A tiny, discreet bandage rested at the hollow of her throat.

""I can never repay you,"" Ellie’s mother said, her voice shaking as she held Julian’s hand. ""Teresa told me everything. The mountain... the doctor... the private specialists you hired to oversee her permanent treatment.""

""You don't owe me anything,"" Julian replied with deep humility. ""Ellie gave me my life. Everything I have, everything I do from that moment on, is built on her gift.""

Teresa smiled from the archway, holding an open Bible. Dr. Arthur Mercer stood nearby, dressed in a sharp vintage suit, acting as the sole witness.

""Shall we begin?"" Dr. Mercer asked with a gentle grin.

Julian smiled, turning toward the stairs. ""Whenever the flower girl is ready.""
