Chapter 11 - The Razor’s Edge

The next three hours were pure agony. David paced the length of the surgical waiting room like a caged beast. Every minute felt like an eternity carved into his flesh. He couldn't weep; his tears had dried into a burning hollow inside his chest. He clutched the encrypted flash drive inside his pocket, his knuckles white, drawing strength from the cold metal casing.

At 7:15 AM, the automatic doors parted. Dr. Morris emerged, her surgical cap in her hands, her face etched with profound exhaustion.

David stopped dead in his tracks, unable to speak, terrified that a single word would bring the sentence of death.

""She survived the craniotomy,"" Dr. Morris said softly, letting out a long breath. ""We relieved the intracranial pressure successfully. Clara is stable.""

David collapsed onto a row of vinyl chairs, his hands covering his face as a ragged sob finally tore from his throat. ""And... the baby?""

Dr. Morris offered a faint, weary smile. ""It’s a miracle, David. The fetal heartbeat stabilized once Clara’s oxygen saturation returned to normal. The placenta didn't detach any further. But Clara is still in a deep coma. The next twenty-four hours are critical for neurological recovery. She is fighting with everything she has.""

""Can she hear me?"" David choked out.

""The auditory cortex often processes sound even in comas,"" Dr. Morris answered gently. ""Speak to her. Let her know you are there.""

David walked back into the post-op recovery unit. Clara’s head was now wrapped in heavy surgical dressing, but the color had begun to creep back into her pale cheeks. He knelt beside her bed, taking her hand and pressing it against his lips.

""You held on,"" David whispered, tears streaming down his cheeks. ""You and our little girl. I know it’s a girl, Clara. I know it. You rest now. I’m going to finish this. They will never touch you again.""

He checked his wristwatch. 8:15 AM. The Vance Enterprises shareholder summit was forty-five minutes away at the Grand Sovereign Hotel in the financial district. David stood up, wiped his face, straightened the collar of his jacket, and walked out of the hospital with an iron resolve.
