Chapter 8 - The Shadow Across the Street

David caught the implication instantly. Their home was situated in a private gated community, but directly across the street lived Marcus Reed—a retired military engineer and an eccentric tech enthusiast who had spent the last five years in a bitter zoning dispute with the Vance family board. Marcus had installed a state-of-the-art panoramic surveillance rig on his front porch to monitor neighborhood traffic, much to Evelyn's annoyance.

""Marcus,"" David whispered to himself.

""I can't officially request civilian footage from a third party without a warrant, which the DA won't grant without probable cause,"" Detective Harris said quietly, tapping her fingers against her tablet. ""The legal process is tied up in bureaucracy. But if a private citizen voluntarily provides evidence...""

""I understand,"" David said, nodding firmly. ""Thank you, Detective.""

David checked on Clara one last time. Her vitals were stable, though the nurse warned him that the brain swelling was entering a critical forty-eight-hour window. He leaned down, kissed Clara’s forehead, and whispered a promise of justice into her ear.

Stepping out of the hospital, the night air was biting and cold. David hailed a cab, refusing to use the family car service that Evelyn could easily track. As the taxi navigated the wet city streets toward his neighborhood, his mind raced through every interaction, every conversation, every cruel glance Elena had ever directed at Clara. Elena’s hatred hadn't started today; it had been simmering for years, rooted in a twisted fear that Clara would inherit the controlling family share through David’s unborn child.

When the cab pulled up outside the darkened neighborhood, David paid the driver and walked through the pedestrian gate. The street was eerily quiet, the grand limestone mansions looming like silent monoliths under the amber glow of the streetlights. His own house was taped off with yellow police ribbons, dark and violated.

David crossed the asphalt and approached Marcus Reed’s gate, pressing the intercom button. After a long minute, a harsh, crackling voice came over the speaker.

""It’s two in the morning. Go away.""

""Marcus, it’s David Vance,"" he said urgently into the metal grill. ""My sister tried to kill my wife today. I need your help.""
