Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

Before David could process the sight, the chime of the elevator bell echoed down the hallway. Arthur Sterling stepped out, carrying a polished leather briefcase. At sixty-two, Sterling was a ruthless legal predator who had protected the Vance family's shady corporate dealings for over three decades. His tailored charcoal suit showed not a single wrinkle despite the late hour.
""David,"" Sterling said smoothly, extending a manicured hand that David refused to touch. ""A tragic turn of events. Truly heartbreaking.""
""Get out of here, Arthur,"" David said, his voice flat and laced with poison. ""You have no business in this hospital.""
""On the contrary, I have every business being here,"" Sterling replied, leaning casually against the nurse’s station counter. ""I represent Vance Enterprises, of which you and your sister are primary beneficiaries. Your mother sent me to prevent a catastrophic error in judgment.""
""Elena assaulted my wife,"" David said, stepping closer until he was inches from the older man’s face. ""That isn't a family dispute. It's felony aggravated assault and attempted murder.""
Sterling didn't flinch. He merely unlatched his briefcase and pulled out a manila folder, flipping it open to reveal several typed documents. ""What you witnessed, David, was a tragic domestic accident during a heated emotional discussion. If you press charges, Elena will countersue for defamation and malicious prosecution. More importantly, your mother will immediately trigger the morality clause in your father’s trust.""
David scoffed. ""The trust? You think I care about the money right now?""
""You will when the hospital bills arrive,"" Sterling countered ruthlessly. ""Clara's health insurance is tied to Vance Enterprises executive benefits. If your mother terminates your position tomorrow morning—which she has full legal authority to do—Clara loses her coverage immediately. Long-term coma care and neonatal intensive support run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Can you pay that out of pocket?""
David felt the blood drain from his face. The cruelty was breathtaking, engineered with precision to break his will.

""Sign this non-disclosure agreement and recant your police statement,"" Sterling whispered, offering a heavy gold pen. ""Elena walks free, and your wife’s medical care is paid for indefinitely. Refuse, and you walk out of this hospital bankrupt with a dying wife.""
David looked from the pen to the door of the ICU, his soul tearing in two.
