Chapter 15 - A Breath in the Dark

The aftermath was swift and merciless. By midday, the news of the Vance family scandal was the lead story across national networks. Vance Enterprises shares lost sixty percent of their value before trading was halted by the exchange. The board convened an emergency session in the afternoon, voting unanimously to strip Evelyn and Elena of all executive powers and appointing an independent trust overseen by David’s legal representatives to liquidate the company's assets.

Elena was held without bail, facing twenty years in state prison. Evelyn sat in a holding cell, stripped of her designer clothes, awaiting indictment on multiple conspiracy charges.

None of that mattered to David anymore.

As the sun began to dip below the city skyline, casting long golden beams through the hospital windows, David sat in his familiar plastic chair beside Clara’s bed. The noisy alarms had been silenced, replaced by the gentle, steady beep of normal vitals. The heavy bandage on Clara’s head was neat and clean, and the fetal monitor showed a strong, rhythmic heartbeat that filled the quiet room with a peaceful cadence.

David held Clara’s warm hand in both of his, leaning his forehead against her knuckles. The exhaustion of the last thirty hours finally crushed him, but his heart felt lighter than it had in years. The poison that had infected his family for generations had finally been excised.

""It’s over, Clara,"" he whispered softly into the twilight. ""They can never hurt us again. You did it. Our baby did it.""

The room was silent save for the hum of the ventilators. David closed his eyes, preparing to rest for the first time since the nightmare began.

Beneath his fingers, Clara’s hand twitched.

David froze, his breath catching in his throat. He looked up, his eyes wide.

Clara’s fingers curled slowly around his palm, gripping him with faint but deliberate strength. Her eyelids trembled, the long lashes parting slowly against the pale light of the setting sun. A soft, breathless sigh escaped her lips, and her hazel eyes, cloudy with sleep but filled with recognition, found his face.

""David..."" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

David smiled through a fresh wave of tears, pressing a kiss to the center of her palm. ""I'm here, my love. You're home."""
