Chapter 1 - The Weight of Oxygen

The cold tile beneath Nora’s knees felt like solid ice, leaching what little warmth remained in her trembling body. Her ribcage felt banded in steel wire, tightening every second. A six-year-old’s vocabulary did not possess words for bronchial constriction or hypoxia; she only knew the world had shrunk to a dark, narrowing corridor.

"Mommy..." she whispered, though the sound emerged as an agonizing hiss against her dry throat.

Across the immaculate kitchen island, Eleanor Vance stood with arms crossed, fingers perfectly tucked into the folds of her navy cardigan. Her posture was a monument to aristocratic discipline. A silver-haired matriarch of Oakridge, Eleanor judged human failure by posture and cadence.

"Stand up, Nora," Eleanor said smoothly. Her voice carried no malice, which made it terrifying. It was merely transactional. "Pouting on the floor will not excuse you from completing your violin scales. Good breeding requires self-possession."

"Grandma... please..." Nora pointed toward the walnut credenza, where the small blue plastic canister had vanished ten minutes ago. "In... haler."

"Respect precedes remedy," Eleanor replied without shifting her gaze. "When you learn not to raise your voice at an elder, your privileges will be restored."

The front door crashed open, the brass knob slamming into the drywall with splintering violence. Sarah Vance swept into the foyer, her suede jacket open, hazel eyes ablaze with raw terror. Behind her, two local officers followed, their hands naturally hovering over duty belts.

"Nora!" Sarah screamed, dropping her purse to the hardwood. She skidded onto the kitchen tile, pulling Nora’s tiny frame into her lap. "Where is it? Where is her inhaler?!"

Officer Miller stepped forward, his eyes scanning the room. "Ma'am, is the medication on the premises?"

Eleanor didn’t flinch. She raised her chin, looking over Sarah’s head as if regarding a nuisance of dust. "Officer, you are trespassing on private property during a private family disciplining matter. She will receive her medicine once her tantrum concludes."

"She’s suffocating, you monster!" Sarah barked.

Officer Miller shoved his way to the credenza, ripping drawers open until he unearthed the blue canister hidden beneath silver cutlery napkins. He tossed it to Sarah. With practiced maternal muscle memory, Sarah primed the chamber, slid the spacer over Nora’s pale lips, and pushed down twice.

Puff. Inhale.

Nora shuddered. A ragged, whistling gasp expanded her lungs, followed by an explosion of desperate, choking sobs. Sarah buried her face into her daughter’s sweaty hair, rocking her on the cold tile while Eleanor looked down in cold, impassive distaste.
