Chapter 7 - The Canvas of Truth

Desperation breeds focus. Sarah worked eighteen-hour days. After Nora fell asleep, Sarah sat under a single desk lamp, painting late into the night. She created a series of picture books titled Breathe, Little Sparrow—a whimsical yet poignant story about a bird with fragile wings whose grandmother locked her in a golden cage, claiming the open sky was too dangerous.

A small, independent children’s publisher picked up the rights for a modest advance. It wasn't fortune, but it was legitimate, independent income. It proved self-sufficiency.

One afternoon, Calum brought a package up the stairs. "A delivery for the artist," he said with a wink.

Inside was a letter from an elementary school teacher two towns over. Dear Ms. Vance, I read your book to my class today. Three of my students who use inhalers proudly showed them to the class instead of hiding them in their cubbies. Thank you for giving them a voice.

Nora sat beside her mother, looking at the colorful illustration of the little sparrow breaking free from the cage’s gilded bars.

"Is the bird free now, Mommy?" Nora asked.

"She’s learning how to fly," Sarah said, kissing her forehead. "And no one will ever lock her cage again."
