Chapter 2 - The Severed Tether

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic alcohol and metallic paper sheets. Dr. Robert Chen sat on a rolling stool, examining Nora’s chart with a deepening furrow between his brows. Through the curtain, Nora slept lightly, an albuterol nebulizer mask resting on the bedside table beside an IV drip.

"Oxygen saturation dropped to seventy-eight before the paramedics stabilized her," Dr. Chen said quietly, keeping his voice beneath the hum of the monitors. "Sarah, another five minutes of airway restriction could have triggered severe cerebral hypoxia or cardiac arrest."

Sarah’s hands trembled around a disposable coffee cup. The coffee had grown cold hours ago. "She withheld it deliberately. As a punishment."

Dr. Chen sighed heavily, looking over his spectacles. "Eleanor Vance has served on this hospital’s advisory board for twenty-two years. But medical abuse is medical abuse. I have filed a mandatory report with child protective services. The police took my preliminary affidavit."

"She thinks she owns everything," Sarah whispered. Her voice was cracked, raw from screaming, but beneath it burned something new. For seven years, ever since Julian died before Nora was even born, Sarah had tolerated Eleanor’s controlling micro-management to ensure Nora had trust funds, schooling, and stability.

Detective Marcus Cole entered the bay, removing his badge from his belt loop. "Ms. Vance? We’ve booked your mother-in-law on a preliminary charge of felony child endangerment."

Sarah closed her eyes, letting out a breath she felt she had held for a decade. "Did she post bail?"

"Her attorney, Arthur Sterling, was at the precinct before the ink was dry on the arrest report," Cole admitted grimly. "She’s out. But there’s a temporary protective order active until the arraignment Monday morning. She cannot come within five hundred feet of you, Nora, or the child’s school."

"A piece of paper won't stop her," Sarah said.

"Then we make it ironclad," the detective replied softly. "Pack your essentials. Don’t sleep at that estate tonight."
