Chapter 9 - The Verdict of Shadows

The jury deliberated for fourteen hours across two grueling days. When the bell rang signaling a verdict, Sarah held Elena’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned chalk-white.

"On the count of felony child endangerment, we find the defendant... guilty of misdemeanor child neglect."

The courtroom let out a collective breath. It was a partial victory, but not the clean sweep Sarah had prayed for. The felony had been knocked down by jurors swayed by Eleanor’s clean record and philanthropic image.

The judge, an older jurist with no patience for high-society hubris, banged his gavel. "Mrs. Vance, your standing in this community does not exempt you from fundamental decency. You are sentenced to three years of probation, five hundred hours of community service, and a mandatory renewal of the protective order."

Eleanor’s face turned stone. For a woman whose social currency was untainted prestige, the word guilty was a brand burned into her flesh.

As they walked out into the corridor, Eleanor stopped opposite Sarah. For the first time, Eleanor’s eyes betrayed a flicker of raw, unrestrained venom.

"You think you’ve won, Sarah," Eleanor whispered, her voice like sandpaper on dry wood. "Family court is not bound by this petty ruling. A child of Julian’s blood will not grow up smelling of fish and bilge water."

"Julian would have hated what you’ve become," Sarah replied quietly. "In fact, I think he ran away from you long before he died."

Eleanor stepped back as if slapped, her pearl-draped throat bobbing as Sarah turned her back and walked away.
