Chapter 1 - The Text That Broke the World

The grey SUV melted into the quiet curve of Maple Crest Drive, leaving only the soft hum of an exhaust pipe fading against the midday stillness. Clara remained frozen on the welcome mat, her fingers trembling as she stared at the glowing glass screen in her palm. The text message consisted of eight cold words: I’m not coming back. Don’t look for me.

Beside her, seven-year-old Leo tightened his small grip on the handle of his rolling suitcase. His lower lip quivered slightly, but he didn’t cry. Behind him, four-year-old Toby shifted his weight, his tiny backpack patterned with dinosaurs sliding off one shoulder. The porch smelled faintly of cut grass and impending rain, ordinary and serene, completely indifferent to the collapse of their lives.

Clara forced her knees to bend. She sank down to the concrete threshold, meeting Leo’s gaze. The boy’s brown eyes held an impossible weight, asking questions no child should ever formulate. She reached out, smoothing the rumpled collar of his tan jacket with hands that refused to steady.

""Where is he going, Mom?"" Leo whispered, his voice cracking against the silence. ""He took all the bags from the trunk, but he left ours right here.""

""I don't know yet, honey,"" Clara breathed, swallowing the burning acid rising in her throat. She gathered both boys into her chest, hiding her face in Toby’s soft hair so they wouldn't see the terror distorting her features. But as she pulled them inside and reached to lock the heavy oak door, her phone chimed again. A notification popped up from their joint bank account: Balance: $0.00. Account closed.
