Chapter 14 - Blood and Ledger

""Remarkable performance, Marcus,"" Richard said smoothly, walking down the concrete aisle with casual, rhythmic steps. ""Truly inspiring. You almost made your wife believe you were the martyr in this sad little play.""

Richard stopped five paces away, his gun pointed directly at Clara’s chest. ""Mrs. Hayes, your husband didn't sacrifice himself for your family. He stole twelve million dollars of our firm’s cryptocurrency reserves and attempted to frame you as his co-conspirator to buy himself time to reach Zurich. He left you on the porch because he needed the authorities to waste twenty-four hours interrogating a bewildered housewife while he slipped through customs.""

Clara stared at Marcus. In the dim light of the storage bay, her husband couldn't meet her eyes. His chin dropped to his chest, confirming the bitter truth with his silence. Every tear, every desperate excuse had been another layer of deceit.

""Now, Clara,"" Richard said politely, extending his free hand. ""The external drive. Hand it over, and I will let you walk back out to your sons. You have my word as an executive.""

Clara stood motionless. She felt the heavy plastic drive tucked inside her inner jacket pocket. She looked at Richard, then at Marcus, and finally out toward the rain-soaked bay where her children were shivering behind a metal crate. She realized with sudden, absolute clarity that Richard would never let any of them walk out alive; witnesses were liabilities to men like him.

""You want the ledger?"" Clara whispered.

She reached into her coat, pulling out not the drive, but the emergency flare she had grabbed from the delivery van’s floorboards. With a single, violent motion, she struck the ignition cap against the wall, igniting a blinding, roaring jet of white phosphorus directly into Richard's face.
