Chapter 2 - The Empty House

The deadbolt snapped shut, echoing like a gunshot through the entryway. Inside, the suburban split-level felt instantly hollowed out, as if every memory they had built over eight years had been vacuumed into the void. Clara herded the boys toward the kitchen table, setting their bags by the hallway closet.
Toby immediately wandered toward the living room, looking for his father's discarded tablet on the arm of the recliner. The chair was empty. In fact, Clara realized with a sick lurch, the living room bookshelves were half-bare. Marcus hadn’t left on an impulsive whim. He had spent weeks systematically packing his life away while she had been busy running errands, tutoring Leo, and managing the household.

Clara opened the refrigerator, desperate for an anchor of routine. She poured two cups of apple juice, her mind racing through numbers, dates, and debts. Her purse sat on the granite counter. She unzipped it, pulling out her wallet to inspect the plastic cards. Debit card, canceled. Credit card, canceled. She opened the zipper pouch: sixteen dollars in crumpled bills and a handful of loose quarters.
""Mom, look,"" Leo said softly, stepping into the kitchen. He wasn’t drinking his juice. In his small hands, he held an open legal pad he had pulled from the home office desk. The page was scrawled with Marcus’s hurried handwriting, detailing flight numbers, account transfers, and a single woman’s name: Elena - Zurich. Beneath the name was a date stamped for that exact afternoon, along with a chilling handwritten note: They can’t trace what doesn’t exist.
