Chapter 15 - The Fire Cleans the Slate

Richard shrieked, dropping the gun as the blinding thermal flare engulfed his vision. The concussive flare lit the warehouse in brilliant, demonic shades of magnesium white. Clara didn't hesitate. She snatched the dropped weapon from the concrete floor, kicked Richard’s legs out from under him, and aimed the gun at the padlock chain holding the rear emergency door.

Two deafening shots blew the latch apart. The heavy door swung open, revealing the grey, churning waters of the river docks below.

""Clara! Untie me!"" Marcus screamed from his chair, coughing against the thick sulfurous smoke pouring from the flare. ""Don't leave me here! I'm your husband! I'm their father!""

Clara paused at the threshold of the open door. The cold rain splashed against her face, washing away the dirt, the tears, and the lingering remnants of the naive suburban mother who had stood paralyzed on her porch yesterday morning. She looked back at Marcus through the veil of white smoke.

""You stopped being their father the moment you drove down that street,"" she said, her voice completely steady, cold as iron.

She pulled the black hard drive from her pocket and hurled it into the roaring fire of the burning flare. The plastic melted instantly, the internal circuitry frying into useless ash. The evidence, the money, the leverage—all of it vanished into the inferno.

Clara turned her back on the burning room, stepped out into the rain, and ran toward the shipping crates where her boys were waiting. Leo saw her coming and stood up, pulling Toby into his arms. Clara swept both of them into her chest, her heart beating strong and fierce. Behind them, sirens began to wail across the industrial docks, cutting through the storm. They had no money, no home, and no husband—but as Clara led her sons down the wet pier toward the flashing blue lights, she knew they were finally free."
