Chapter 10 - The Confession

David dragged Mark Vance out of the executive office and down the iron staircase, Vance’s boots bouncing limply against the corrugated metal steps. In the center of the warehouse floor, Eli Vance stood waiting, his Winchester rested casually across his forearm, watching his nephew with cold, unforgiving eyes.
""Uncle Eli... please,"" Vance whimpered, spitting blood onto the gravel. ""You’re my blood! You can’t let this animal kill me!""
""You lost your right to blood the day you put drugs in our schools and turned this town into your personal syndicate,"" Eli said coldly. ""You aren't my kin anymore, Mark. You’re just another criminal facing judgment.""
David threw Vance down onto a heavy wooden chair, pulling a spool of industrial zip-ties from his tactical vest. Within thirty seconds, Vance was bound securely to the frame, his broken hands immobilized, his chest heaving against the tight bonds.
David pulled Vance's smartphone from his jacket pocket, unlocking it using the man’s swollen thumb against the biometric sensor. He navigated directly to the encrypted messaging applications.
""The real estate trust documents,"" David demanded, holding the glowing screen in front of Vance’s battered face. ""You haven't submitted the final power of attorney to the county clerk yet. Where is the notary seal?""
""I won't tell you,"" Vance hissed through broken teeth. ""The moment the sun comes up, the automatic deadline passes. The state takes temporary wardship, and my legal firm liquidates the land. You get nothing. Lily gets put in foster care, and you go to federal prison for the rest of your life.""
David didn't yell. He didn't threaten. He reached into his medical pouch and pulled out a small, amber vial of surgical disinfectant—pure isopropyl alcohol. He uncapped the bottle, letting the sharp, medicinal fumes fill the space between them.
""You have open compound abrasions on your knuckles, Mark,"" David said clinically. ""And your ribs are punctured beneath that tape. Infection in an untreated industrial wound sets in within six hours. But the pain... the pain starts the second this touches the raw nerve tissue.""
Vance's bravado evaporated instantly. The haughty kingpin who had swung a hickory club at a defenseless little girl suddenly broke into pathetic, terrified sobs. ""Stop! Don't! The notary was Briggs's sister! She’s holding the signed revocation papers at the municipal archive downtown! The digital copies are on a flash drive inside the safe in the wall behind my desk! The combination is 11-04-89!""
David handed the phone to Eli. ""Check it.""
Eli ascended the stairs, returning three minutes later holding a black, heavy-duty encrypted USB drive. He plugged it into his field tablet, his eyes scanning the directories.
""It's all here, Dave,"" Eli confirmed, his voice thick with relief. ""The forged signatures, the wire transfer receipts to Sarah’s offshore account in the Caymans, and the payoff ledger for half the municipal police department. This isn't just custody paperwork. This is enough evidence to bring the state attorney general and the FBI down on this entire county.""
David looked down at Vance, whose face was bathed in pathetic tears of relief, thinking he had bought his survival.
""You're going to live, Mark,"" David said quietly. ""Because I want you to spend the next forty years in a concrete cell, watching the world forget you ever existed.""

Suddenly, the tactical radio on David’s shoulder crackled with a frantic, static-laced transmission from the water tower:
“Daddy! Daddy, there are lights coming up the ladder! Someone is trying to open the hatch!”
