Chapter 2 - The Red Line Crossed

The twin barbed probes struck David square in his tactical vest, failing to penetrate the reinforced ceramic plate beneath his uniform. The electric charge sparked harmlessly across the nylon webbing. Without hesitating for a microsecond, David spun on his heel, caught the wires in his left hand, and yanked the patrolman forward off his feet. The officer crashed onto the concrete with a dull thud, his breath exploding from his lungs in a stunned gasp.

Mark Vance paused at the top of his swing, momentarily surprised that a decorated soldier had bypassed the municipal perimeter so cleanly. That split-second hesitation was the only opening David needed.

David closed the distance with terrifying speed. In hand-to-hand combat, distance was time, and time was life. David ducked beneath the descending arc of the hickory club, sliding inside Vance’s guard. With his right elbow, he delivered a crushing horizontal blow directly into Vance’s sternum. The impact sounded like a dry branch snapping underfoot. Vance gasped, his eyes bulging as the club slipped from his numb fingers and clattered harmlessly against the concrete floor.

""Daddy!"" Lily scrambled across the floor, her small sneakers slipping on the slick surface before she threw her arms around David’s combat trousers. She was shaking so violently that David could feel her small heart hammering against his shins like a trapped sparrow.

David reached down, scooping her up with one arm while keeping his defensive stance wide and balanced. ""I've got you, baby girl. I'm right here. Close your eyes. Don't look at anything.""

Vance wheezed on the ground, rolling onto his side, coughing blood onto the gray floor. Yet despite the shattered ribs, a twisted, mocking grin spread across his bruised face. ""You... you think you're a hero, Miller? Look around you. The whole county belongs to us. You think those badges out there are here to protect her? You're a trespasser. You're an AWOL maniac who just assaulted two peace officers.""

Behind them, the front door of the house swung open. David turned, expecting to see his ex-wife, Sarah. Instead, standing in the kitchen doorway, holding a manila folder, was Detective Raymond Briggs—a senior investigator from the county sheriff's department whose face was infamous across local television.

Briggs didn't draw a weapon. He simply held up the folder with a cold, deadpan expression. ""Drop the child, Sergeant Miller. You are in direct violation of a court-mandated protective custody order. And if you take one more step with that girl, every sniper on the perimeter will open fire.""

David shifted Lily slightly behind the bulk of his armored shoulder, his tactical instincts calculating angles, cover, and sightlines. Through the garage window, a tiny red dot hovered steadily on the center of his chest.
