Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

The room fell into expectant silence as two hundred of Manhattan's wealthiest benefactors turned toward the stage. Weston had just limped into the rear of the ballroom on his crutches, basking in sympathetic glances from unsuspecting colleagues. He caught Eva’s eye from across the room and smirked, confident that the sheer weight of polite society would force her to keep quiet to avoid a scene.
He had miscalculated.
The giant screens did not display the foundation's annual philanthropic reel. Instead, high-definition security footage filled the fifteen-foot display with absolute clarity. The audio, boosted through the ballroom's concert-grade sound system, reverberated through the hall.
“Give me your ATM card and PIN right now! Pay for the wedding!” Eleanor’s shrill, unhinged voice boomed from the ceiling speakers.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Eleanor froze, her champagne glass trembling so violently that amber liquid splashed over her satin wrist.
On screen, the footage showed Weston cornering Eva, his face twisted into an aggressive sneer as he stepped directly into the space of a heavily pregnant woman, backing her against the door frame.
“A pregnant woman should be grateful she's still wanted. Stop being selfish, Eva.”
The disgust in the room was palpable. Prominent socialites took immediate steps backward, distancing themselves from Eleanor as if she carried a contagion.
Then came the clip of Eva’s defensive stomp, followed instantly by Weston doubling over, and finally, Eva’s parting words echoing with crystalline authority: “The wedding is dead, Weston. Tomorrow, my agency evicts your worthless company.”
Before Weston could utter a word of damage control, the display cut directly to high-resolution scans of the Delaware bank accounts, displaying Weston and Eleanor’s signatures alongside line items of diverted foundation funds.
Eva stepped up to the podium, perfectly composed, adjusting the microphone with one manicured hand.
""Good evening, distinguished guests,"" Eva said smoothly, her voice commanding the stunned silence. ""Tonight was meant to celebrate our annual community investments. Regrettably, it must also serve as a public notice of formal severance. Mr. Weston Cross and Mrs. Eleanor Cross have been removed from all board positions, stripped of executive authority, and are currently the subject of an active criminal referral for corporate theft.""
Weston went pale, his face draining of color until he looked like a ghost. He tried to shout, but his voice cracked. ""Eva, this is an illegal breach of privacy! Turn that off!""
""The only thing turning off tonight, Weston, is your line of credit,"" Eva replied without looking at him.
Two uniformed officers, accompanied by the hotel’s head of security, flanked Weston and Eleanor from behind.
""Mr. Cross, Mrs. Cross,"" the lead officer said in a low, firm tone. ""You need to accompany us outside. There are pending warrants for grand larceny and fraudulent wire requests.""

As the officers escorted them toward the service exit, Eleanor turned back, her face contorted in sheer malice. ""You think you won, Eva? Check your personal offshore portfolio! You have nothing left to give that bastard child!""
Eva’s hand instinctively tightened on the edge of the podium as a sharp, genuine pain seized her lower abdomen.
