Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Karen was trembling, clutching the small black hardware token against her chest like a shield. She had been on Eva’s secondary payroll as a domestic liaison for three years, a quiet woman whom Eva had funded through university courses and personal medical emergencies.

""You, Karen?"" Eva breathed, leaning heavily against the mahogany desk, her knuckles white with strain. ""After everything I did for your family?""

""They promised me five hundred thousand dollars, Eva!"" Karen cried, tears streaking her makeup. ""My brother's chemo debts... Eleanor said you had billions, that you wouldn't even miss it! She told me you were going to jail anyway!""

The dashboard clock on Eva’s open phone read 11:58 PM. Two minutes.

A severe contraction hit Eva, forcing her down to one knee. Diane rushed forward, but Eva held up a single trembling hand, keeping her eyes fixed on Karen. She refused to look weak. She pulled herself back up, using the corner of the heavy desk for leverage, her breathing shallow and ragged.

""Karen,"" Eva said, her voice dropping into an eerily calm, steady cadence. ""Listen to me very carefully. The police arrested Weston and Eleanor twenty minutes ago at the St. Regis ballroom. They are facing federal charges for wire fraud and money laundering. If you step out that door with that token, you are an accessory to international grand larceny.""

Karen looked toward the private elevator, terror flashing across her features. ""You're lying. Eleanor has political connections—""

""Look at my phone,"" Eva interrupted, pointing to the open terminal on the desk displaying the breaking news feed from CNBC. The headline scrolled across the bottom: CROSS HEIRS DETAINED IN MULTI-MILLION FRAUD STING.

Karen stared at the screen, her jaw slackening.

""If you hand me that token right now,"" Eva whispered, fighting through a blinding wave of pain, ""I tell the district attorney you were acting under coercion and cooperated fully. If you run, Vance will tackle you before you reach the fire escape, and you will spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary while your brother dies alone in a county clinic. Choose. Right now.""

11:59 PM.

Karen broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. She stumbled forward and dropped the token onto the glass desktop.

Eva didn't waste a breath. She jammed the hardware fob into the encrypted laptop terminal, pressed her thumb against its glowing sensor, and spoke into the open speakerphone: ""Herr Weber. Token synchronized. Authorization code: Vance-Zero-One-Cancel. Revoke the wire immediately.""

A tense four seconds passed. The only sound in the penthouse was Eva’s heavy, labored breathing and Karen's quiet weeping.

""Authorization confirmed, Frau Vance,"" Weber’s voice returned, clinical and detached. ""The transfer has been halted. Funds remain in the primary escrow vault.""

Eva exhaled, and as she did, a sudden, violent rupture sent a flood of warm fluid across the floor.

Eva doubled over, crying out in raw agony. ""Diane... the baby's coming. Now!""
