Chapter 11 - The Crescent Mark

Grace’s fingers trembled so violently she nearly dropped the photograph onto the blood-spattered desk. She pulled back the cuff of her stained uniform sleeve. There, etched into the pale skin above her wrist, was the unmistakable crescent-shaped birthmark.

For twenty-six years, she had believed the story told to her by the state foster system: that she had been found in a carrier outside a municipal clinic in Queens, a child without a name or an origin. She had worked every menial job she could find to support herself and the sickly girl she had met in the system—her adoptive ""sister,"" Clara, whose medical bills had driven Grace into service at Whitfield Manor in the first place.

She had always assumed her employment here was a stroke of pure, random luck—an agency placement filling a sudden vacancy for a third-floor housemaid.

It had never been random.

Arthur had placed her here. He had watched her sweep the floors, polish the silver, and pour his morning coffee, keeping her close while keeping her completely in the dark. Why? To protect her? Or to keep his greatest vulnerability locked beneath his own roof where his enemies couldn't find her?

""Miss Mercer?""

A voice broke the silence of the study. Grace instinctively closed the steel drawer, slipping the brass keys, the letter, and the thumb drive into the deep inner pocket of her maid's apron.

An older man in a tailored charcoal suit stood in the doorway. He didn't look like the federal agents outside; he carried no badge, no weapon, and no tactical gear. He wore silver-rimmed spectacles and held a slim leather briefcase under his arm. His expression was impassive, calculating, and disturbingly serene.

""I am Marcus Vance,"" the man said softly, stepping into the room without waiting for an invitation. ""Elena’s brother. And the legal representative for the Whitfield Estate's institutional stakeholders.""

Grace stood up, backing toward the fireplace, her heart pounding against her ribs once more. ""The federal marshals are downstairs. You shouldn't be here.""

""The federal marshals are currently detaining a rogue asset who failed her assignment,"" Marcus replied calmly, resting his leather briefcase on the corner of the mahogany desk. ""Elena was always too emotional. She lacked the patience required for high-stakes arbitrage. Arthur's fall was premature. It complicated matters.""

He adjusted his glasses, his cold eyes dropping directly to Grace’s left wrist, where her sleeve was still pulled back.

""You have Arthur’s eyes, you know,"" Marcus whispered. ""He spent twenty years hiding you behind bureaucratic firewalls, thinking that if you were just an invisible maid in his house, our syndicate would never look twice. But a bloodline is a very hard thing to erase from an estate registry, Miss Whitfield.""
