Chapter 14 - The Family Blood

The dashboard screen flickered in the gray morning light, casting cold shadows across Grace’s face. Arthur’s revelation felt like a physical blow to her chest. Senator Davis Whitfield—the charismatic, silver-haired politician who appeared on Sunday morning talk shows preaching corporate accountability and judicial integrity—was the architect of the entire nightmare.

Grace leaned back against the worn fabric of the driver’s seat, her hands trembling against the steering wheel. It all made horrifying sense. How else could Elena Vance have moved millions through frozen accounts without triggering Treasury red flags? How else could Donald have secured private security licenses with clean federal backgrounds? Davis had been shielding the syndicate from Washington, waiting for his brother to fall so he could consolidate the Whitfield empire under the guise of an untainted family heir.

""Davis doesn't know you survived the fire in Zurich twenty years ago,"" Arthur’s recorded voice continued, a dark edge of sorrow cutting through the static. ""He believes my line ended with Sarah. The London vault doesn't just contain financial assets, Grace. It contains Davis’s original signed contracts with the Zurich cartel and the wire transfers proving his complicity in your mother's murder. Take them to the press. Do not trust the Department of Justice. Do not trust the Marshals. The only shield you have is total, blinding public exposure.""

The video file cut to black with a soft digital pop.

Grace sat in the silence of the damp morning, her mind working with razor-sharp clarity. Clara’s surgery was in two hours at the Presbyterian facility upstate. If Davis discovered that Marcus and Elena had failed to secure Arthur’s digital keys, his first move would be to eliminate any leverage left on the board. Clara was a sitting duck.

Grace turned the key in the ignition. The old Volvo’s engine sputtered, coughed, and roared to life. She slammed the gear into reverse, spun the car around on the gravel shoulder, and accelerated down the mountain road toward the interstate.

As she merged onto Route 9, her rearview mirror caught the silhouette of a black, unmarked SUV pulling out from a concealed access trail two hundred yards behind her. It didn't turn on its headlights, but it matched her speed with terrifying precision.

Grace gripped the wheel, her foot pressing the accelerator flat against the floorboards. The chase wasn't over. It had simply left the mansion and moved onto the open road.

She reached for Arthur’s phone, now resting on the passenger seat. She dialed the direct line to the Presbyterian pediatric oncology wing.

""Nurse's station,"" a brisk, professional voice answered after three rings.

""This is Grace Mercer,"" Grace said, her voice dropping all pretense of the timid maid, hardened into pure steel. ""I need an immediate transport for Clara Mercer in Room 412. Disconnect her from the public registry now.""

""Miss Mercer? I’m sorry, but Clara was already checked out twenty minutes ago,"" the nurse replied smoothly. ""A private transport team with federal clearance arrived with authorization from Senator Whitfield's office.""
