Chapter 12 - The Vance Syndicate

The name hit Grace like a physical blow. Miss Whitfield. Hearing it spoken aloud by a man who looked like an executioner in a corporate suit sent a cold shiver down her spine.

""I don't know what you're talking about,"" Grace said, keeping her chin raised, fighting to keep her voice from cracking. ""I’m the maid. I need to leave.""

Marcus didn't move to block the door, which frightened Grace far more than if he had drawn a weapon. Power didn't need to brandish firearms; power simply controlled the exits.

""Let us dispense with the melodrama, Grace,"" Marcus said, clicking open the brass locks of his briefcase with two sharp, synchronized snaps. He pulled out a crisp, single-page legal document and laid it smoothly across the desk. ""Arthur is currently in an induced coma at St. Jude’s. His intracranial pressure is rising. The probability of his survival beyond the next forty-eight hours is less than twelve percent.""

He tapped the document with a gold Montblanc pen.

""This is an emergency power of attorney transfer, pre-signed by the Whitfield board. As Arthur's direct, undocumented issue, your claim to the estate could tie our acquisitions in probate court for a decade. We do not have a decade. The markets move in milliseconds.""

""You want me to sign away my life before I even know who I am,"" Grace said, disgust dripping from every syllable.

""I want to save your sister, Clara,"" Marcus replied smoothly.

The temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero. Grace’s breath hitched in her chest.

""Clara’s bone marrow transplant at the Presbyterian facility upstate is scheduled for 8:00 AM tomorrow,"" Marcus continued, not looking up from the paper. ""A very complex, very expensive procedure. The donor match was located in Germany, secured through private funding provided by a Whitfield charitable trust—a trust that I currently control. If this document is signed, the surgical team proceeds. If it is not signed... the donor tissue is diverted to a paying client in Tokyo, and Clara’s file is closed for administrative non-compliance.""

He pushed the gold pen toward her.

""Elena wanted you dead because she is small-minded,"" Marcus said softly. ""I want you rich, silent, and far away. Sign the release. Take Clara to Zurich. Live the comfortable life Arthur was too cowardly to give you.""

Grace stared at the gold pen. Her hand shook. The memory of Arthur's fractured whisper in the crawlway echoed in her mind: Do not let them bury the truth with me.

She reached out her hand, her fingers hovering over the pen. Marcus watched her, a faint, predatory smirk beginning to curl the corners of his thin lips.

Grace grabbed the heavy crystal inkwell sitting beside the document instead. With a violent, deliberate motion, she inverted the inkwell, pouring thick, indelible black ink across the legal document, soaking the parchment, the desk, and Marcus Vance’s manicured leather briefcase.

""My sister would rather die than live on blood money,"" Grace whispered.

May you like

Marcus’s smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, venomous shock. Before he could speak, the study doors swung open with a resounding thud. Two uniformed federal marshals stepped inside, their sidearms drawn.

""Marcus Vance?"" the lead agent barked. ""Step away from the desk and put your hands behind your head. We have a federal warrant for your arrest on corporate espionage and attempted homicide.""
