Chapter 2 - Cold Stone and Broken Glass

The foyer suddenly felt as vast and inescapable as a cage. Grace’s mind raced through the brutal geometry of the room: twenty yards to the double oak front doors, bolted and connected to the central alarm panel; twelve yards to the service corridor leading into the industrial kitchen; and five feet between her and Victoria Whitfield.

""I need to call an ambulance, Mrs. Whitfield,"" Grace said, keeping her tone meticulously flat, struggling to summon the deferential mask she had worn for half a decade. ""He’s bleeding. He needs a trauma team.""

""Give me the phone, and I will make the call myself,"" Victoria replied, her eyes dark, locking onto Grace with predatory focus. ""You don't understand the machinery at work here, Grace. If you call the authorities now, you aren't saving Arthur. You are simply stepping in front of a firing squad.""

Arthur’s grip on Grace’s apron slackened, his eyes rolling back under fluttering lids. A small, involuntary shudder ran through his torso as consciousness slipped away entirely. The phone vibrated violently against Grace's palm. The black silhouette contact sent a new message: Is it done? The transport is waiting at the south gate.

Grace locked the screen with an audible click.

Victoria lunged.

The elegance melted away in a single violent motion. Victoria’s manicured fingers clawed toward the phone, catching Grace across the collar of her uniform. Fabric tore with a sharp rip. Grace rolled backward onto the slick floor, kicking outward with her work shoe, catching Victoria’s shin through the slit of the silk gown. Victoria gasped in pain, stumbling sideways into an antique porcelain pedestal. The priceless urn atop it teetered, crashing down into a shower of white and gold shards across the polished floor.

Grace scrambled to her feet, clutching the phone against her chest. She didn't look back as she sprinted toward the kitchen swinging doors, her rubber soles screeching against the marble. Behind her, Victoria’s composure shattered into raw fury.

""Donald!"" Victoria shrieked, the command bouncing through the high ceilings. ""Lock down the perimeter! She has the device!""

Grace slammed through the double swinging doors into the cavernous, stainless-steel kitchen. The silence here was suffocating, broken only by the hum of the industrial walk-in coolers. She reached for the heavy brass panic button under the prep counter, but the red indicator light was dead—the circuit had been physically cut.

Before she could reach the back pantry exit, the heavy metal door clicked open from the outside. Donald, the estate's private head of security, stepped through the frame, blocking the moonlight, a suppressed pistol held discreetly down by his thigh.
