Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Corridor

Arthur spent the rest of the night walking the endless, silent corridors of the Vance mansion. The sprawling estate, usually a symbol of ultimate wealth and untouchable power, suddenly felt like a cage built on secrets. He replayed the image of Clara’s bruised back and terrified eyes in his mind over and over again. Who within these walls had the audacity—and the cruelty—to lay a hand on anyone under his roof? He summoned his head of security, Victor, to the dimly lit study. Victor stood stiffly, reciting the list of staff and visiting associates who had access to the upper west wing that afternoon. But none of the names felt right; they were all too predictable, too cautious. Arthur knew the rot ran deeper, tied to the old family legacy and the toxic circles of high society that frequented their gatherings. As Victor exited into the shadows, Arthur locked the heavy oak door. He pulled open his private desk drawer, revealing a hidden security monitor displaying the hallway outside Clara’s temporary quarters. She was awake, sitting on the edge of her bed, clutching a small pendant to her chest. Arthur watched her every move through the camera lens, a strange, fierce protectiveness taking root in his chest. But just as he turned away, a flicker of movement appeared in the corner of the hallway screen—a hooded figure slipping silently toward Clara’s door.
