Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

Clara stared blankly at the locked wooden door of her room, the memory of the previous evening replaying like a haunting film. Working at the Vance estate was supposed to be her fresh start, a way to escape the crushing debts and dark reputation of her hometown. Instead, it had plunged her straight into a nightmare orchestrated by someone she trusted. A soft knock broke her trance. She froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. When she opened it a fraction, Arthur stood there, his expression unreadable in the dim hallway light. He didn't ask permission; he stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him. He handed her a small tube of medicated ointment, his movements deliberate and uncharacteristically gentle. As he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper, carrying a weight that demanded absolute honesty. He told her about his own troubled history within this house—how the Vances ruled through fear and isolation. Clara looked into his intense, dark eyes and felt a strange shift within herself. The fear began to recede, replaced by a dangerous spark of solidarity. She opened her mouth to tell him about the warning note left under her pillow, but a sudden, violent crash echoed from the main gallery downstairs, shattering the quiet night.
