Chapter 8 - Fractured Loyalties

Back inside the main house, the tension reached a boiling point in Arthur’s private study. Arthur, Clara, and Leo stood around the heavy oak desk where the ledger and the photograph lay exposed under the harsh desk lamp. Arthur’s hands were clenched into tight fists; the veins in his forearms stood out sharply. He realized with sickening clarity how deeply complicit his own family name was in these atrocities. He looked at Clara, seeing not just an employee, but a survivor standing tall amidst ruins. He promised them both that immunity and absolute protection would be theirs, no matter the cost to his inheritance or his standing in the corporate world. However, Leo hesitated, warning them that Julian had powerful allies on the board of directors who would turn the tables and frame Arthur for embezzlement if they tried to go to the police. Just as they were plotting their next move, the security alarm system shrieked through the house. Red emergency lights began to flash along the baseboards. The main power grid had been cut from the outside, plunging the upper floors into pitch-black darkness. Footsteps—multiple pairs—began marching up the grand staircase.
