Chapter 10 - The Unseen Benefactor

Arthur bolted from his study and rushed to the main security terminal in the basement bunker, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Charlotte followed closely behind him, her face pale with renewed dread as the haunting memories of the past rushed back to the surface. Arthur furiously punched in the master override codes to access the exterior camera archives, but the screen flickered violently before displaying a wall of static. ""The feed has been jammed,"" Arthur growled, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. He grabbed the heavy iron key hanging on the wall and sprinted toward the side service exit that led directly out to the main front driveway, ignoring the pelting rain soaking his tailored suit within seconds.
By the time Arthur reached the imposing iron gates, the torrential rain was washing away any physical trace of the vehicle. There were no tire tracks, no footprints in the gravel, and no sign of the black sedan. The only evidence that someone had been there was a heavy, wax-sealed manila envelope wedged firmly between the iron bars of the gate. Arthur’s hands trembled slightly as he pulled the envelope free, breaking the crimson wax seal with his thumb. Inside was a single sheet of heavy linen paper, inscribed with neat, chillingly familiar handwriting that did not belong to Julian. It read: “The man you put away was merely a foot soldier in a much larger war. Welcome back to the real game, Arthur. Check your personal vault.”

Arthur stared at the words, a cold dread pooling in his stomach. He hurried back inside the manor, dripping wet, where Charlotte and Clara were waiting anxiously in the grand foyer. Without offering an explanation, Arthur rushed past them down to the private basement vault hidden behind the wine cellar—the secure repository where he kept his most sensitive family documents and emergency capital certificates. He spun the combination dial with lightning speed, threw open the heavy steel door, and scanned the rows of safety deposit boxes. Box number four, reserved for his personal inheritance documents, had been slightly pulled ajar. Inside sat a small, encrypted flash drive and a legal deed transferring ownership of Hargrave Global's primary foreign subsidiary to an unknown entity named ""Vanguard Holdings.""
""Who sent this?"" Charlotte asked breathlessly, stepping into the vault behind him and reading the deed over his shoulder. Her eyes widened in absolute horror. ""Arthur, Vanguard Holdings is the shell corporation Julian used to funnel our assets overseas. But... if Julian didn't control it, who does?"" Arthur stared at the encrypted flash drive, realizing with terrifying clarity that the corporate warfare destroying his life ran much deeper and higher than a simple sibling rivalry. Julian hadn't acted alone; he had been a pawn funded by an anonymous syndicate that was now stepping out of the shadows to claim the prize for themselves. ""We need to plug our digital footprint immediately,"" Arthur said, his voice hard as steel. ""Pack a bag for you and Lily. We're leaving the manor tonight.""
