Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Serpent

The heavy thud of the manila folder hitting the glass table seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the boardroom. Julian’s carefully practiced smirk vanished entirely, replaced by a mask of pale panic as he stared down at the red-ribboned file. ""What is the meaning of this theatrical nonsense?"" Julian sputtered, his voice cracking slightly before he regained a semblance of control, looking desperately around the room at the startled directors. ""Arthur is clearly unwell, clutching at wild conspiracy theories to mask his declining mental state. Security, please escort him out—""

""Sit down, Julian,"" Arthur commanded, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a raw authority that froze the corporate security guards in their tracks near the door. Arthur stepped closer to the head of the table, resting his palms on the polished wood and leaning in. ""You spent five years believing you buried every trace of your crimes beneath ash and rubble. You thought you could loot my accounts, manipulate my board, and hold my family hostage in the shadows. But you made one critical mistake, brother: you left a witness."" Julian’s breath hitched audibly, his eyes darting wildly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline as if searching for an escape route. ""There are no witnesses,"" Julian hissed, dropping his polite facade entirely as venom dripped from his words. ""The fire consumed everything!""

""Except the truth,"" a calm, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.

The heavy oak doors swung open once more, and all heads whipped around in stunned disbelief. Standing in the entrance, bathed in the bright morning light, was Charlotte. She wore a simple yet elegant white dress, her hair pinned back neatly, walking with the quiet grace of a queen returning to her throne. Several board members gasped audibly; one elderly director clutched his chest in sheer shock, whispering a prayer under his breath. Julian stumbled backward, colliding violently with his executive chair as the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse exhaling its final breath. ""C-Charlotte?"" he stammered, his voice reduced to a terrified squeak. ""No... that's impossible. I saw you...""

""You saw what you wanted to see, Julian—what you needed to believe to sleep at night,"" Charlotte said, stepping gracefully into the room and standing beside Arthur. She placed a reassuring hand on Arthur’s arm, anchoring him as the full weight of their five-year nightmare finally began to lift. ""You locked me in the sub-cellars, forged my signatures on the offshore transfer documents, and left a decoy body in my place to satisfy the police investigation. But you forgot one crucial detail: paper survives fire when it's kept in a steel vault."" Arthur slid the top document from the folder—a certified forensic accounting report stamped with the federal seal and backed by digital metadata proving Julian’s direct involvement in the embezzlement and attempted murder.
