Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Trap

The mahogany conference room on the top floor of Hargrave Tower was stiflingly quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of a Montblanc pen against the polished glass table. Julian Hargrave sat at the head of the long table, impeccably dressed in a charcoal-grey designer suit, his silver-tongued smile radiating an aura of false benevolence. Surrounding him were the senior members of the board of directors, men and women who had grown wealthy under Arthur’s leadership but were easily swayed by whispers of instability. ""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Julian began, his voice dripping with theatrical concern as he stood up to address the room. ""It pains me more than words can express to bring this motion before you today. But as your Vice President, and as family, I must put the future of Hargrave Global above personal sentiment.""
He clicked a remote, projecting a series of documents onto the massive screen behind him—medical evaluations from a compromised psychiatrist, falsified reports detailing Arthur’s erratic behavior, and financial projections showing temporary stock dips. ""Arthur’s tragic loss five years ago broke something fundamental inside him,"" Julian continued, projecting an image of sorrowful resignation. ""He is no longer fit to guide this company through the upcoming global market shifts. Therefore, I move that we formally strip him of his CEO status and transition leadership to an interim executive committee led by myself."" A murmur rippled through the boardroom. Several directors exchanged uneasy glances, whispering among themselves as Julian’s carefully constructed narrative began to take hold.

The heavy oak doors at the far end of the conference room suddenly swung open with a resounding bang, cutting Julian off mid-sentence. Arthur strode into the room, flanked not by security or legal counsel, but walking with an erect posture and an icy, unreadable expression that immediately commanded the space. He wore his signature black suit, his dark hair neatly combed, and his eyes locked onto Julian with the terrifying intensity of a predator cornering its prey. ""Forgive me for being fashionably late, Julian,"" Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room as he took slow, deliberate steps toward the head of the table. ""I was busy reviewing some rather fascinating historical documents from the archives.""
Julian’s confident facade flickered for a single, panicked micro-second before he quickly recovered his charming smile, though a bead of sweat formed at his temple. ""Arthur, old man, this meeting is closed to non-executives—especially those whose competency is currently under review,"" Julian chuckled nervously, attempting to rally the board's support. Arthur didn't blink. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick manila folder identical to the one Charlotte had given him, and tossed it casually onto the center of the glass table, right in front of Julian’s plate. ""You're right, Julian,"" Arthur said, his lips curling into a cold, humorless smile. ""We do need to talk about unauthorized access, forgery, and embezzlement. Let’s start with who really burned down the east wing five years ago.""
