Chapter 13 - The Descent into the Mud

The impact of Elena’s tackle caught Beatrice entirely off balance on the slick, rain-drenched marble of the balcony. The small derringer fired with a sharp, pathetic crack, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly off the stone balustrade into the night.

Both women tumbled to the ground, Beatrice shrieking in fury as her fingers clawed at Elena’s face, tearing at her hair. Elena curled her body tightly around the newborn, absorbing the blows with her back, using her elbows to shield the baby’s fragile head. The cold rain poured over them like a deluge, turning the terrace into a chaotic brawl of torn silk and bruised skin.

"Let go of him, you gutter rat!" Beatrice shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely eradicated as she reached for the baby's swaddle.

Elena kicked out with all her remaining strength, her bare heel catching Beatrice squarely in the chest. The older woman gasped, tumbling backward against the low stone railing. For a terrifying second, Beatrice teetered on the wet ledge, her arms flailing against the wind, before gravity claimed her.

With a muffled scream, Beatrice plunged over the edge, crashing through the glass canopy of the conservatory on the ground floor. The sound of shattering safety glass echoed across the courtyard, followed by a sickening, heavy thud against the stone patio below.

Silence fell over the upper terrace, punctuated only by the thrumming helicopter blades and the cries of the baby.

Elena lay on the wet marble, shaking uncontrollably, her chest heaving as she pulled the infant against her cheek. "You're safe," she sobbed into the wet fabric. "You're safe, my sweet boy. You're safe."

Heavy footsteps pounded up the exterior service stairs. Julian burst through the gate, soaking wet, his eyes wild with terror.

"Elena!"

He dropped to his knees in the puddles, throwing his arms around both of them, pulling them into a tight, desperate embrace. Elena buried her face in his neck, the warmth of his skin finally breaking the icy shock that had paralyzed her for hours.

"I'm sorry," Julian wept, his tears burning against her rain-soaked shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Elena. I didn't know. God forgive me, I didn't know."

Below them, the sound of shouting police officers and paramedics filled the courtyard as they swarmed the shattered remains of the conservatory. Captain Miller appeared on the balcony moments later, his service weapon holstered, his face grim.

"Paramedics are on their way up for the child," Miller said gently, resting a hand on Julian's shoulder. "Vance is alive, but in critical condition. He’s already in custody."

Julian looked up, his voice hollow. "And my mother?"

Miller paused, looking down toward the shattered glass below. "She survived the fall, Julian. But she won't be returning to this house. Ever."

As Miller helped Elena to her feet, Julian’s phone, which had fallen from Beatrice's pocket during the fall, lay vibrating on the stone floor, its screen miraculously still intact. Julian picked it up. A new message had just arrived from an encrypted overseas server.

Beatrice was not acting alone. The real master of the trust is boarding a flight to your city right now.
