Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Study

Elena held her breath, her hand clapping gently over the baby’s mouth to prevent even the smallest sigh from escaping into the chilled air of the study. The heavy brass doorknob turned until it reached its limit, rattling violently against the deadbolt. A pause followed, stretching the silence so thin Elena could hear the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock across the room.
Then came a voice from the hallway, low and measured.
"Elena. I know you're in there."
It wasn't Beatrice. It was Detective Marcus Vance.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. Why was Vance still in the house? Julian had been escorted outside into the police cruisers minutes ago. Why had the detective returned, and how had he bypassed the perimeter alarms?
"Open the door, Elena," Vance continued, his tone devoid of the authority he had displayed in the kitchen. Now, it sounded weary, desperate, and cold. "You found the file, didn't you? Julian always kept his most dangerous truths in that wall safe."
Elena didn't move. She stared at the paper in her lap, the name Elena Vance staring back at her like an accusation from the grave. Marcus Vance had a sister who vanished thirty years ago. Growing up in the same high-society circles, Julian had always spoken of Vance as a trusted family friend, a protector.
"You knew," Elena whispered through the heavy wood, unable to contain the shock. "You knew Julian wasn't a Sterling."
Outside the door, a low sigh escaped the detective. "Julian is my nephew, Elena. My sister didn't die in an accident. Beatrice took him straight from her hospital bed and used her husband's wealth to bury the paper trail. For thirty years, I played their game, waiting for the right moment to reclaim what was stolen."
"So you framed him?" Elena’s voice rose, trembling with outrage. "You let Beatrice frame your own nephew for murder?"
"I didn't frame him," Vance said sharply through the door. "Beatrice did. But I didn't stop her. Because as long as Julian is behind bars, the trust fund defaults to the next surviving blood relative—the child in your arms. And as his closest living maternal grand-uncle, I will petition for legal guardianship."
Elena gasped. It wasn't just Beatrice who was hunting the fortune; Vance had orchestrated his entire career to position himself for this exact moment. He wasn't the law. He was another wolf circling the Sterling inheritance.
Suddenly, the sound of a key sliding into the lock sent ice through Elena’s veins.

"Beatrice gave me the master key before she went to the lower terrace," Vance said calmly. "Step away from the baby, Elena. I won't hurt you, but this family’s debt is going to be settled tonight."
The heavy lock clicked open. The mahogany door swung inward, casting Vance’s long, drenched silhouette across the Persian rug. In his right hand, he held not his service badge, but an unregistered snub-nosed revolver.
